I don't think that your computer is the problem. Automotive computers are (usually) like a light bulb, either work or they don't. If you put a chip in there that's different software, so my light bulb analogy doesn't apply for that.

On the other hand, a damaged sensor will yeild varying results while still allowing your engine to actually run. Obviously, the computer only knows what the sensors are telling it...
