rather than just jamming it into reverse.. it's a security feature of the manual Transmissions.. so that you don't just accidetnly be cruising at 60mph and drop it into reverse

No I wouldn't. I would have to do everything to get the darn thing to back up sometimes. Neutral, first, second fifth, neutral second, reverse, reverse. You name it I would do it sometimes.
I honestly think something was bent before I got it. Getting it torn down right now. Hopefully the aux shaft is all that's wrong, but I won't know for at least a day.
