The A/C puts quite a load on our small engines. But, I have to use mine quite a bit (when I don't have the top down, looking cool but sweating everywhere...

If I think that I am going to run someone, I turn it off for the duration. Otherwise, I'm used to it. At least it cools my car down fast (black interior) and stays cool when it's 115 outside. As far as the compressor coming on every 3-5 seconds... that does sound like a bit much. And my passengers don't notice it when it comes on but I do. Maybe take it in on a hot day and have the shop look at it. Do you have underdrive pullies? Those would probably cause this.
