A lot of people seem to agree that there is really no gain to be had with removing it (at least for street duty that is.) Although more air is available due to the bigger intake hole, it is now able to suck in hot air as opposed to cold air only.
One option you have is to cut the silencer. This allows it to still get cold air, while at the same time, opening up the hole a bit. To do this, just use a pen and trace around the opening while the silencer is installed. Then, remove it, and make your cut about 1/2" past that line, so the silencer extends just past the hole in the fenderwall.
