Question Gears For A 01 Gt? Which Is Best?

I HAVE A 2001 GT. NOTHING MAJOR DONE. I DO A LITTLE BIT OF HIGHWAY DRIVING BUT NOT MUCH. AND I DON'T PLAN ON DOING A SUPERCHARGER OR TURBO. BUT I WANT TO PUT SOME GEARS IN IT. IT DOES HAVE THE 4.6 281. BUT WHAT GEAR SHOULD I GO WITH? PLEASE DO THE POLL. AND POST A REPLY AND TELL ME WHY I SHOULD GO WITH THAT KINDA GEAR.

I think that the 3.73 gear is the best performance gear all round. If you don't spend 80% of you time on the highway you'll be fine. Most guys with stangs that I know, run 3.73's and love them.

i drive a 98 cobra with 4.10s

i turn about 2400 rpm@70 mph. it's a little steeper than i care for when highway driving so i'm probably gonna switch to 3.73s (then ultimately get a low end cam --someday). BUT they do lay the power down great! if you don't mind the rpms, i like 'em.

My buddy runs the 3:73's and he loves em. There great for everyday driving, and you can really feel the difference, thats why I bought some. Now if I can only find someone to install em, UGH!

If you were going to supercharge or turbo your car I'd say get 3.73's but for NA cars 4.10's are great. I put 4.10s in my 99 GT, and I love them. At 55 MPH I Tach 2000, at 82 MPH I tach 3000, in 5th gear. I do maybe 50-75 Miles of highway driving a month, so there is no problem. The car is alot more fun to drive in traffic now.

I went with 3.73 in my car, and I love them. I do a lot of highway between school and work. Mine is a 98 GT w/ 4R70W, it made a lot of difference on the lower end. I didn't lose much top end either. I have gotten the car up to 130-135MPH on the speedo and haven't had any probs still wants to pull further, still get good mileage, and take off a lot quicker.

With your 5-speed go with the 3.73's. 4.10's are better for auto cars.

I wasn't going to say anything because I end up having to explain 100 times that my car is a street car not a drag only car but here goes. By the way I didn't rack up 73K miles in 2.5 years on my car by driving to the track only.

Anyone notice that the poeple on here recommending gears are all 96-98 GT or Cobra owners except for one? No offense you guys but you don't know what a 99-02 GT needs in the way of gearing, the car makes power differently than yours. The power band on a 96-98 GT falls off well before a PI headed car and that makes a big difference in gearing. In fact you basically fall in the same category as the 5.0 cars that make peak power at a lower RPM.

The most effiecient gear for a 99-02 NA GT is a 4.10, it gives you room to grow with bolt-ons and puts you through the traps right at your peak power without any negative effects. On the freeway at 80MPH you'll be right around 2900-2950 RPMs. If you think that's too high my dads stock explorer sits at 2900 RPMs at 80MPH. Top speed shouldn't be a concern either since with a 4.10s you'll acutally be able to use 5th gear and can still go over 160MPH if your motor makes enough power to push it that fast. MPG shouldn't be an issue either, with 4.10s I averaged 19-20MPG during my daily commute and as much as 27 MPG on long distance trips. With 4.30's I still get 19MPG and about 24-25MPG on long trips not bad for cruising at 80MPH (3100 RPM).

For arguements sake a 3.73 gear in our cars puts you through the traps below your power band in 4th gear slowing you down so without slicks you basically end up with no gain in ET only a little better 60 foot. The only reason in my book to go 3.73 in a 99-02 car is if you have future plans for a power adder. Even then there are ways around it like my car that will see a power adder in the next year or so, I'll keep my 4.30s and go to a 28" tall tire.

Go with 4.10's let that be your first mod. Save up if you have to, but get gears first. I'm getting mine installed this week and I have had my car for a year now...

I say 3.73s if you are going forced induction later. 4.10s if you plan to stay N/A. Call me crazy, but 4.10s are too much gear for me on a 5-speed.

I recently had some 4.10's installed and I love them. I haven't went to the track yet but when I speed shift I stay in the right power band for racing. I do agree If I was going to get a super charger I would have gone with 3.73's but for N/A 4.10's rule...
