Talking 96 gt

i am about to buy my first mustang (after wanting one for about 14 years). i have found a NICE 96 gt, low miles (47K), beautiful paint (gorgeous red), tight tranny (no whine or slack) and no rattles. has anyone seen very many gt's without power windows/locks? now for the kicker: the car has no spoiler! the dealer cannot verify that the car has not been wrecked (the carfax reveals nothing of the sort). i am trying not to get too excited, to keep from getting my hopes up. personally i think it was wrecked and the rear spoiler wasnt put on. i got up underneath it and found a little overspray, but no weld marks out of the ordinary and the styrofoam in the rear bumber looked about 6 years old. i actually like the look of it without the spoiler, it reminds me of the old LX 5.0s. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 97 GT, cloth seats, no power except for the mirrors, and no wing, it came this way from the factory, and I believe that it is a "248A", basically a 4.6L engine in a V6 body and V6 interior kinda like the older 5.0 LX I guess. You may be looking at something similar in the 96. Good luck if you get I love mine

Cool

Wade: That's called a GTS. Notice my name? I used to have one, too. You are dead on about the old LX 5.0. That's what Ford was going for when they made them. They couldn't hardly sell them so they didn't make many of them. BUT it was my understanding that they were ONLY made the 95 model year and the first part of the 96 model year (My 96 was made the last part of 1995, can't remember what month). The 248A package. As far as that 97 that springs has, dude, are you SURE it's a 97 and not a 96??? Wade, there's nothing wrong with that car. It's made that way. I weighed mine with 3/4 tank of gas without me in it and it weighed right at 3250 pounds.

Default LONG...i think

The salesman I bought it from said something about it being a special production thing, but he didn't know anything about it, I didn't even think about it till I read a letter in the April 02 MM&FF about this guy that was thinking about buying a "basic" GT (I can't quote verbatum since I tossed it....grrrr) and he was told by whoever was selling it that it was a "racing version" called a GTS, if I remember right MM&FF said no it wasn't a racing version but a 248A (maybe someone has this issue and can chime in)

Anyway I went and got the original window sticker and mine is a 97 with the Preferred Equipment Pkg. 248A, although it cost $1,000....dosn't seem basic for a grand This is pretty cool info, I never really looked at before, since I just got it.

Humm.....I didn't know I had a SS exhaust....sounds ok tho
Traction-Lok axle<===is that good? standard?
I wonder how many were made?

Cool

Hmmmm.....there's no telling how many were made. I didn't even know they made them thru 97 but obviously they did. Learn something new every day. I agree. $1000 doesn't seem like a basic package. More like an add on, lol. Hey you wouldn't be able to scan and post a pic of your window sticker would you? I'd like to see exactly what the GTS had since I imagine my 96 had the same thing. Cool deal, man.

I'm 99% sure they did not make them in '97. The last year was '96. Have you verified for sure that it is a '97? It's probably a '96. As for the traction-lok axle, it's been standard issue on GT's for quite some time now. For a relatively stock daily driver the T/L is ok but the spring clip can break over time and your car will 'peg leg' (one wheel burnout).

Cool

My bet is it was made right at the beginning of the production of the 97 cars at the end of 1996 (either sept or oct i think is the beginning of the model year). May even be a left over 96 that Ford sold and labeled a 97. Who knows. Hey springs, look on your driver's side on the sticker in the door jam and see what date the car was built. I think it's on the door itself. Either that or on the door jam of the car. Mine was a 96 model but was made in 1995 (early 96 model year).

The date on the door says 05/97. I tried to take a pic but it came out to blury.

I can't scan the sticker now, the scanner hasn't worked since I installed Window$ XP, but I'll look for a new driver and if I can't find one, I can scan it at work

Cool

Well now we know there are some 97 GTS's out there. Thanks for the trouble of scanning those window stickers. I guess they charge for the package because they use the LX interior for it?? That's a bit of a crock paying extra for a base mustang. I bought mine back in 99 with only 14,300 miles on it for $12,000. The guy rarely drove it. In fact that last year he had it he only put 1,000 miles on it. It still smelled new. I wanted a loaded stang but just couldn't pass on that deal. Got rid of it last year because of reoccurring tranny and motor problems.
