Maf
I bought my mustang used and it already had a K & N filter installed. I don't know if they messed w/ the MAF or not, so I was wondering if there was anyway to determine the size w/out taking the whole thing apart.

The stock MAF is the usual dull aluminum color with the stock black electronics box on top. Any aftermarket MAF will be chrome or black plastic, a few are red. The stock units are 70mm but have the big resticktive bar down the center. You can modify the stock unit by cutting out the bar but it could mess the whole unit up. Most likely you have the stock unit with the K&N stock on it. Don't listen to the hype in the adds about a 15 hp gain with just a new MAF. you relly need to have the MAF replaced when upgrading all the other parts, ( exhaust,TB,pullies,etc...) Hope this helps.
GO VOLS ! !

I've never taken out the ruler and measured mine but all the articles I've read on the stock MAF ( gutting mod ) say it is a 80 mm MAF. The articles are on Corral, Mustang world etc.. They show the step by step procedures on how to do the Mod and all the different articles state the MAF on the 4.6's as being stock 80mm. After checking the stats it looks like they are mistating the MAF size. the 4.6 2V is 70MM and the DOHC is 80MM. looks like only the COBRA has a stock 80mm and the GTs have a 70MM MAF.

96-98 GT's used:
65mm - TB 70mm - MAF I had to look it up, cause I went to 70mm - TB and 80mm - MAF.

would you recommend doing that mod? i.e--did it show a noticable gain in performance/power?

I did the TB by itself, only thing it did was lighten my wallet.... If you are going to do induction mod do this:
K&N Filter CAI (or other type) TB 70mm MAF 80mm Underdrive Pulleys this will give you a notciable difference in performance.

'02 has a stock 80mm MAF without the center post. C&L upgrade is a 85mm MAF. '99 - '01 upgrade using a 80mm MAF.
