Breaking in an engine
Whaddup,
Now I heard when you get a new engine it is ideal to let it "break in". I would assume that means, not put it under heavy loads like reving the piss out of it and dumping the clutch ( if you had one)...The reason I'm asking is, pretty soon I'll be talking to some salesman at my work about getting a 2002/2003 Mustang GT, black, with black leather interior, MACH audio system, 5spd, sick! My question should be pretty obvious now, [Should I take it easy with the engine for a few 1,000 miles?] Skamz P.S> Never owned a new-new car and I want to take great care of this one! |

The salesman should know more, but you have to let all the seals and gaskets get worn in. I think it's nothing over 3k rpm's, but i'm not sure. Like I said, the salesman will know.

Skamz I know everyone's first inclination is to floor, rev it up, tearing up the streets. I would. If I didn't have this thought I would do burns out and all that **** considering I'm comming from driving a 94 Probe GT ( which is for sale, lockieman@hotmail.com ), so a V8 is going to be fun! but like I said, I never drove a new new new car 0 miles on the Odometer. and I hear of people breaking in their new rebuilt 442s and all that ****, so I was just seeing what I should do to keep this car mint as long as I can, because we are all here for the same reaons, WE LOVE MUSTANGS! |

Like I said...not sure, but I would atleast wait till the first oil change before getting on it...if nothing else, you'll find any factory defaults before you tear into it.

Take it easy for the first 500 miles........then change the oil and filter. There, your done, go racing.

That sounds pretty good. Why would I change the oil and filter after only 500 miles? Maybe I don't understand what your saying.

In general are most things for mustangs inexpensive?
For example, when I went to get a cat-back for my probe, it was crazy expensive -->$650, but was because only 2 other companies made cat-backs for the car |

It doesn't hurt to take it easy on the motor, but that's really not the complete reason anymore to breakin a new car. The clutch would need a break in of 500 miles, but these days motors are supposively broken-in at the factory. This ensures that they don't have to dish out warranty products and money for every damn car sold that wasn't granny driven for the first 1500 miles.
I had a brand new Wrangler TJ a couple years back(only new veh. I've owned) and this is what I was told by the 25 year experienced car salesman that has worked for Chrysler, GM and Ford dealerships and attended all manufacturer meetings available to him. I believe it. hope this helps
