I got a used on on e-bay to port it. You don't have to worry about messing up the one on the car and you can take your time with it. Check e-bay or your local junk yards for one and port that. Than do the swap. If everything works well , port the one you took off the car and sell it.

I purchased a used T/B and plenum on E-Bay also and polished the plenum and T/B to a mirror finish. I also noticed that the inside of the plenum was really rough and had lots of slag hanging in it. I ported it as much as the tools I had allowed and polished it out. I put an intake spacer in ( $ 15, what the hell.. if it helps it helps) and hopefully the port job helped out. With all the rough edges and drag caused in the thing it had to help. Best of all it was free except for the cost of the dremel bits and my time. I polished my old plenum and sold it for $75 bucks! only pais $25 for the used one with the T/B!

I read the same article in mm&ff and they specifically said that it was a mod you could do on the 99 & ^ gt. I was wondering if the same could be done on any 4.6 (96 & ^). I am going to be adding a sc to my 98 and that would definately be a plus to my set up.

I think that on pre-'99(?) cars the walls of the plenum are not as thick and don't allow you to remove enough material compared to the newer plenums, but you can put a ported '99+ plenum on your '96-'98.
If you call Ben Alameda Racing there is a message saying that they don't take cores anymore because of all the 'unusable' cores they received. Because of this it now costs you $220 to buy one from them.

Does the 99+ upper fit the 96-98's without any issues? Is it basically a straight swap?

Yes it fits. Tha one I purchased was from a 2001. I ported it myself. Cost about $10 bucks. Also ported my old 98 plenum. I may not have done as good a job as the pros but mine was probably as good. It had to help, you would not believe what the inside of the plenum looks like . I figured it would be all smooth and clean, "NOT!". even if you clean it up a little it would have to help!
