K&N filter question...Possible disturbing news!!!!
My car was idling erractic and took it to the Ford dealer today. They found that the Valve assembly on the throttle body wasnt functioning properly due to excess dirt buildup. When i asked the mechanic how it could have got that way he told me that it was probably from the K&N filter i have on my WMS Racing cold air kit. He said that they arent very good at filtering the small particles as well as normal filters. Also he said that the mass air sensor could be the next victim because of the filter because of the oil in the K&N getting trapped on the MAF sensors. This may not be worded exactly as he spoke it but i tried to get close. Question is if this is true do i go back to the stock airbox and filter OR is there another performance filter that filters better than the K&N. My car has 28K miles on it and is never drivin in dusty conditions. Thanks for your answers.

I have heard of the filter oil in K&Ns causing problems with MAFs before, but it was almost always because of the user over-oiling after "recharging" the filter.
As far as the contaminants are concerned, If you have one of the standard cold air kits that extend into the wheel well, you are definately exposed to more dirt, rain and god knows what else. Although the filters are designed for such things, I would try putting a K&N in the stock air box without the air silencer and see if that helps your dirt problems. As a side note, I had my K&N filter on my 98 GT for over 60k miles and never had an issue....

K&N filters have been around for years, if there was a problem, IMO it would already have showed it self. But some of these cold air kits could be a different story. |

If they were talking about the IAC valve which is part of the plenum / throttle body assembly...that's a common problem. With a K&N your more likely to contaminate the Mass air sensors, easily fixed by a blast of brake cleaner or contact cleaner.
Nothing to get excited about...
