Gears and tranny problems?
Ok I got a 96 GT with the stock AODE and 3.27 gears. I want to step up to 3.73's but Ive read in an old Muscle Mustangs And Fast Fords (like a 1999 mag) that said on the 94-98 modulars with the AODE if u go higher then 3.55, the transmissions computer will not know what to do even if it has the rigth speedo gear. it said the car wont shift right and line pressure becomes dangerously high. they said u needed a chip like the one from Level 10 that was in the article. I go to highschool and got a budget, id rather skip the chip if i can. anyone got any experience with what im talking about??? any help would be great. also, about how much am i looking at to get a set of gears installed?, thanks.

I think that is bogus. I myself am planning on some 4.10's in a couple weeks. I know many guys with automatic modualrs and don't have any problem with steeper rear gears.

Yeah i here a lot of guys saying its no problem at all, even my friend who is a mechanic at Friendly Ford in Roselle (best dealer anywhere!) said it will shift fine. I kind of want to know from someone who has done it though, i cant risk it. Let me know if you get your 4.10 put in soon. Thanks.

I don't know if this will help or not. I have the 4R70W and I run 3.73 with 3clutch Ford Posi, not 2. I haven't had any problems with mine. The place that put the gears in my car puts them in the 96-98 GT's all the time, they haven't had any probs. They have noticed that the 3.73 seems to make the Auto4.6 real happy. I think the guys with the T45 went with 4.10 on there's. I don't know all the exact diffs between the AODE and 4R70W other than the GearSet and the Mechanical Diode, mostly just stuff I have read about. The tranny is the one thing I haven't messed with yet.

Ok, im confused. What is the 4R70W? Is this the stock transmission. I just always called my tranny an AODE. (Automatice Overdrive Electronically controlled.) Is there a difference or something? How can I find out what exactly I have for a transmission? My car was bought new in 1996 and the trans has remained untouched.

i recently had 3.73's installed in my 1994 mustang gt with automatic transmission. the transmission slips out of gear if i give it too much gas, and goes back into gear when the rpm's go down. it didn't do that before the gear swap, so maybe there's something to that theory about anything more than 3.55's being too much. i haven't yet found out what the problem is. they were just installed tonight.

Since I put my 3:73's in there has been no problems. Even with 8psi boost. I've got a chip in that boosts line preasure and changes shift points to higher rpm range. The 4r70w is the transmission that is in all Modulars, also called the AODE. The 4r70w is in the auto trucks and I think even in the lightning. They are a pretty tough tranny for an auto. Cost of installation depends on the mech. Don't pay more than 350 bucks, 2 - 3 bills should do it. Make sure they have done alot of gear set ups or you can get screwed. The 3:73's make all the difference!!

ok, but you said that you have a chip installed. i don't have one, but i've found that if i start in first gear and shift manually, i don't get the slipping problem. a chip would probably fix it. mine is also a 1994, perhaps starting in 1996 that problem doesn't exist. are the automatic transmissions different starting in 1996? if not, are the transmissions used in 1994 and 1995 just as durable?

Not sure what tranny you have in the 94. Not being a modular car I'm not up on what tranny went into them. I know it is not the 4r70w. Even without my chip in the 3:73's did nothing to the trannys shifting.
P.S. - My 4r70w chirps 3rd when I get on it hard
