AODE/4r70w Question
I have a '98 GT Automatic.
Situation: Cruising at a steady 65 on the highway. If you take your foot off the gas to decelerate, is the lock-up Torque Converter supposed to disengage? And then...re-ingage when you resume speed? If so; is there some way to change that? It annoys the hell out of me. Can someone point me to a resource that describes the controls used in this tranmission? I would like to know shift points and just general operation of the thing. What control does what...what is supposed to happen and when. That sort of thing. Thanks, Rusty (Wishing I had bought a 5-Speed...) |

If you find out that info let me know! Mine used to shift at all kinds of funky times. When I put my chip "on" and when I have the OD "off" it acts totally different. With the chip "off" and the OD "on" it acts like a granny tranny and shifts at all kinds of points. The other way and it is all out performance, shifts at over 5000 rpms when I get on it hard at a light!

Will tell you pretty much everything you need to know about the 4R70W in your vehicle. |

DO you just mean that the RPM's drop off......
I'd check into getting a chip burnt to adjust line pressure, shift points, and lock up points. -Will

What I notice is that every time I come back on the throttle after even the briefest period of deceleration (as in the traffic slows a bit and you have to ease up to keep from hitting the car in front of you...) When you come back on the throttle the reves come up a bit and then drop back. I was reading somewhere that the TC unlocks whenever the brakes are applied. My question was related to that...does the TC Unlock whenever the throttle is released; as well as when the brakes are applied??? Or, is something in my particular car in need of attention. I still don't have the answer to that question, although it may be buried somwhere in that Cougar/TB site that's mentioned above. Thanks for reading. Who burns chips? The dealer? Tranny shops? Can you give me more info? Rusty |

there's only a few guys who "really" know their 4R70W stuff when it comes to chips:
www.apten-us.com www.reinhartautomotive.com www.superchipscustom.com (if done by Jerry W.) TC lockup in controlled by the EEC |
