I have not heard anything

and why would they have to do it?

most states on the 99+ cars do a obd ll test not the sniffer test

I dont understand it either!!
I guess people just throw on everything and hope for the best when smog time comes... either that or they tear it all down and put the stock stuff back on...
Which is to much work here, because my city requires smog EVERY year with registration

But anyhow, I've heard that these mod motors will still pass the sniffer out here even with cams... but I dont wanna take the chance... any decent mechanic/smog tech would know right away by the sound!

I had some crane regrinds in my old 96gt. they had .550 lift and i believe 212 duration. the car barely idled rougher than stock and i gained 14rwhp with them. they still passed smog too. the trick to cams is to go small. you don't need a big cam when you only have 4.6L. imho. yea they sound cool but not the best for smog. btw my 96 made 300rwhp when i was done so not to shabby for a small cam! plus if you get the smaller cam you don't have to upgrade springs, which is a pita to change on our cars!
