Gear noise
I have recently had 3:73 gears installed in my 96 GT. They are great. They do make a bit of noise though. Is this normal or should they be 100 % quiet? Thanks.

Re: Gear noise
Is the noise coming from the rear or from the transmission?
Do you have the stock shifter?

Re: Gear noise
They should be quiet. If the noise showed up immediately after you had them installed, I'd suspect the install wasn't done quite correctly.

Re: Gear noise
I am sure the noise if from the rear end. No I don't have a stock shifter so i do get transmission noise too. I suspecr improper installation.
To correct it does it mean taking the whole thing apart again? I guess it is a shim problem. |

I would take it back to whoever installed the gears...

Re: Gear noise
I took the car in to the guy that installed the gears last night. He agrees that there is too much noise coming from the gears. He figures it is the side to side shims that will need adjusting.
Thanks for your imput. Does any body know the correct gear for the transmission to get the speedo right. I think the original was 18 tooth and the one in there now is 20. The speedo is still off by about 9 or 10% . |

Re: Gear noise
It's been so long, I can't remember which speedo gear you'd use.... If I had to take a guess, I would say a 23 tooth...
To be honest, you're probably not going to get an "exact" reading even with the correct speedo gear, but it should be pretty close. Here is a link to the FRPP usage chart, it even gives you the formula at the bottom to figure out just what speedo gear to use... http://www.fordracingparts.com/download/charts/129.pdf

Re: Gear noise
Thanks for your help Hammer. Someone else mentioned that a 23 tooth gear is the one to use. I don't see a 23 tooth gear listed on the Ford Racing sheet. It only goes as high as 21. I will talk with the installer on monday when i take the car in.
