need help with recalibrating my speedo
I recently had 373 gears installed. My mechanic told me that I had to buy a hand held computer to recalibrate my speedometer. I called the local speed shop and they said they could use a 21 tooth gear, which they will install in the transmission and they said that it would cost 70.00. I have a 97 gt with a 5 speed transmission, also which is the cheapest and best way to go. Any advice will be helpful. bml

Re: need help with recalibrating my speedo
With a 97, you can just change the driven gear on the speedometer cable at the transmission. It'll cost you less than $10 and take about 10 minutes once you've got the car up in the air. 99 and later require either a Speedcal unit or changing it with a handheld/custom tuning.

Re: need help with recalibrating my speedo
Could anyone give me the details of putting the speedo gear in the transmission. I was told you have to drop the pan on your transmission. Any help eould be appreciated. bml

Re: need help with recalibrating my speedo
Get the car up in the air. You'll see at the tailshaft housing where the speedometer cable goes in to the housing. Use a 7/16" wrench to remove the clamp bolt at the cable/tailshaft. Pull the end of the cable out of the tailshaft housing. Use a small screwdriver to pry the c-clip off the plastic speedometer gear. Slide the gear off the end of the cable. Slide new gear on to cable. Reverse the disassembly procedures to re-assemble. Don't over-tighten the clamp bolt though, just snug it up nice and firm.
Total time once the car's up in the air is about 10-minutes for a first-timer.
