99-00 shift points, launch ,redline
Just bought a new black 2000gt now with 600 miles it will be going to the track. The car is a 5-speed, I want to know where you guys shift, launch and what can these motors take. The stock tach says 5800rpm redline, what do you think? I have been a die hard 5.0 guy, need to learn more about these 4.6 motors. I probaly wont modify this car right now(my 89 is WILL run 10s by next summer) I just want to know how to get the most out of it right now. I like the car so far, but it has it's quirks, vibration in trans, growling rear and car has died on me with the clutch in. I have only babied this car so far. I sure hope things will get better,my wife wanted a honda accord and I talked her into another new mustang. I sure hope I wasnt an idiot, what's up with FORD these days anyway. I have owned 9 mustangs 83-00(all v-8) my loyalty to ford is starting to change. OH-WELL maybe if I can get this little 00gt to run high 13s I might be a little happier.
THANKS FOR ALL REPLIES. ------------------ 89 LX notch 9,200 orig miles 2000gt both cars are black. |

I haven't had mine (99GT)to the track yet but just like any car, it's trial and error. I've seen a couple tests that said they got their best runs shifting around 5100-5200rpm. From just running on the street, I tend to agree with this but have no time slips to proof. Congrats on your new ride and have fun!

I,VE GOT A 00 GT WITH A KN AND A TRIAX SHIFTER. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO THE TRACK TWICE AND ACHEVIED A 14.05 @ 98MPH. THIS WAS DONE BUY LAUNCHING AROUND 1800 RPM AND SHIFTING AROUND 5500-5700 RPM. IT SEEMS THAT IF I LAUNCH ANY HIGHER THAN THAT IT WILL RESULT IN ALOT OF WHEEL SPIN. ANY LOWER AND THE CAR WILL BOG BAD. THIRTEENS ARE DEFINATELY POSS, BUT MORE EXPERIENCE WILL BE REQUIRED ON MY PART. WITH SOME NITTOS OR M/T TIRES THIRTEENS WILL BE A WALK IN THE PARK.
OR IF YOU WANT TO SPEED SHIFT YOU COULD GET THERE. FOR ME I HAVE A HARD TIME DOING THAT TO A CAR WITH 3000MI ON THE CLOCK AND A GLASS JAW OF A TRANNY. |

I launch at 2100-2200 and slip a bit to get out of the hole. I have my shift light set at 5400 and probably shift about 5500. Hope this helps out.
