Question WHEN TO SHIFT???

I have a stock 97 GT and I was wondering what is the best rpm to shift at? I do some street racing and I am having trouble deciding what works best. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

If you're powershifting, I'd say shift between 200-300 rpms below redline. If you're granny shifting shift at redline, or 100-200rpms below...

Is redline at 6 or 7 grand? The lines are red at 6 grand but I thought these cars were supposed to redline at 7.

Do not go above 5500 rpm. Don't go near 7000, unless you have a vtec civic!

Redline is definitely 6k. Try shifting it around 5300 RPM's. This is where I shifted to get my best times in my basically stock '97.

Or a 96-98 Cobra.
99 Cobras usually do better shifting at about 6500-6600.

97snakedriver- I didn't know a Cobra reved that high. Live and learn. My dad has a 97 Cobra he's getting rid of it, what is the best shift point in that, stock? I'm not insured on it so I've only driven it once with him in it. May have to take it for a spin before it goes.

For a 97 Cobra the best shift point for speed is right at redline, 6800-7000.

I agree with someone's statement of 5500k. Anything above and you're losing power.
