What the heck?
Well, for a Christmas gift for myself I am buying 3:73 gears for myself, so, I call the dealer to see how much it would cost to be put in. I have talked to the guy who sold it to me from the dealer before, so I thought they would give me a estimate how much it would be for intallation. Well, this is their dumb@$$ answer "well, we can't install the gears because Ford won't let us do to emmisions!" what the good golly? How do they affect emmisions? I think my dealer's service department is smokin' mary jane! What should I do? Well, one more thing, next they tried sellin' me a shifter and were throwin' out price's and itstallation prices, I don't want a shifter, I want the gears! My dealership is queer.

Sounds wack to me. Looks like you'll have to find a performance shop in the area.

Since gears put you in your powerband quicker, and help keep you there, it can be said that they cause your car to put out higher levels of emissions. Ive heard the same $hit from the dealer near my house. What you need to do is find a reputable aftermarket installation shop near you and have them do it. Good luck.

I think my offroad H pipe may have increased emissions too.

I agree with everyone else. You'll most likely get it done much cheaper at a speed shop as well. I don't like to always rag the dealerships because mine in town is very good despite the fact that they told me a 3:73 gear install would be about $600 and they wouldn't even be able to compensate the speedo. Shop around. The more educated you are on what you want done the less you'll get screwed.

They are so full of it. If I brought my truck in for a gear change they would jump all over it.
I work part time at a shop here in St. Louis and we do 94 and up gears for about 300 labor. Remember, you will need to recalibrate the speedo. Not a speedo gear change but an electric pulse counter/divider/multiplier rig. We called Ford Tech and they hooked us up with an after market supplier for these units. Cost about 150 ea. Mike |

The Yellowjacket is a 5-speed '98, and they found a speedo gear. Its the 99's and up that give you problems in that department...

So it wouldn't mess up the speedo or would it? Since it is a 98' , what would I have to buy to fix it?

I believe all you would need is a very inexpensive speedo gear. I don't think it matters in a 98 if you have a 5-speed or auto. I would contact the folks over at Dallasmustang.com to verify though...

Kevin, did you get my email? The 96-98 T45s are the same. Just simply a speedogear will not fix it. The 23 tooth, which is what is recommended for 3.73s with the T45 in a GT will not work. It'll be eaten up in about a month or two because the teeth on the 23 tooth speedogear and the 8 tooth internal drive gear DO NOT MESH. You have to change the internal drive gear to a 7 tooth and then use a 21 tooth speedo gear to correct it. Well, there is no 7 tooth made for a GT T45, only for a Cobra T45. Unless somebody has JUST started making them. Why this is, I don't know. Trust me, I've already been thru all of this crap. So you will have to get a mechanical speedo calibration device. Dallas Mustang has them for $89.95. SHM has them but are more expensive at $130. The electronic compensator is for the 99-up stangs.

No prob fellas. I went thru so much crap and research to find all of that out, too, because I wanted to get it all taken care of while the tranny was apart and getting rebuilt. It just makes me mad that they don't bother to make a 7 tooth internal for the GT. The internal splines on the gear are different for the two trannies. Ford loves to make it difficult sometimes. Oh well. Finally nice to see another Missourian, moosejaw.

What gear ratio are you going to go with? Yes there are speedometer gears for all mustangs including the Cobra. If you choose to go with 4.10s then you need a 23 tooth speedo gear and a 7 tooth internal drive gear. You need to find out if the Cobra T45 has a 7 tooth or an 8 tooth internal drive gear in it. I think that they already use a 7 tooth internal drive gear because I believe you have 3.27s stock which would use a 7 tooth internal and a 19 tooth speedometer gear. So all you would need to do is get a 23 tooth speedometer gear to correct your speedometer if you go with the 4.10s in your vert.

I bought my 23 speedo gear tooth from Steeda and have had no problems with it. I was told that the Steeda gear was better, but I don't remember how reliable that info was. It cost all of $10 and took 5 minutes to install. That's all you need for your GT. And if it ever goes out, you can either put in a new one or try a different route -- no harm done.

Yeah, the Cobras come with a 7 tooth drive gear. I have a 23 tooth gear for my 4.10s. Its pretty close. About 3 mph off at 70. As far as durability, I don't know. I'm pushing 30G on mine and so far so good. But I have heard of people tearing them up in as little as a weekend....

Well then it looks like it works with the 7 tooth internal but I guarantee it will not with the 8 tooth. Plus even if you kept replacing the 23 to use with your 8 you will have lots of pieces of plastic floating around in your tranny and that, to me, is not worth having the tranny tore up from it.
