Mods for a 98 GT
My friend has a 98 gt, it is a 5spd with full exhaust(headers, offroad h, flows), suspension and shifter. He wants to know of some more mods he can do for power(doesnt want gears, I know i keep telling him they feel like 50hp but he doesn't want them), he said something about a cobra intake but that it cost $900 for the intake?!? Do they make new heads or intake for his car and how much are they? I know nothing about modular engines(as u can see i have a 5.0)

Why not gears?! I just got 3.73's put in my '97 and it made a world of a difference. I also haven't seen ANY drop in MPG. This should definitely be his next mod. I'm planning to go to the track (weather permitting) Thursday so I'll let you know what kind of difference in time they made.
If he doesn't want gears, then I'd save some money up and purchase the 99+ heads. Other good bolt-ons are the Steeda timing adjuster, pullies, and a K&N. ------------------ ------------ 1997 GT Flowmasters,K&N,3.27 gears RedSOHC |

The only intake for the 4.6 2V is the FRPP intake and its something like $1500 or something.
He could score a set of new/complete PI heads for around $570. They should add a firm 35HP and really help abouve 4000 rpm. If he wants to get serious about the head swap, there is a nice installation article on www.tccoa.com that should cover most of what he needs. He could always go for pulleys and a MAF. Tell him keep away from a TB as that won't do anything. ------------------ 2001 SVT Lightning (red): Many mods to come- Let the Vette killer begin to take shape 1997 Thunderbird 4.6L: Dynomax exhaust, Mustang intake tube, SVT Lightning 80mm MAF, Accufab MAF adapter, 7" Auto-physics powerstack filter, ram air, B&M 24,000GVW trans cooler, Custom chip, FMS 9mm wires, many more to come... How much do the 99+ heads cost and how much hp do they add? Also what are the PI heads? Crumbie: I know gears would be his best mod and only help him but he doesn't want to...

I just wanted to let you know b/c I was also hessitant about getting gears installed, but now after the fact I wish it would have been my first mod. I can't find any reason not to have them installed.
I've heard that a set of complete factory 99+ heads cost around $700. Someone correct me if I'm wrong b/c I'm also in the market for them. ------------------ ------------ 1997 GT Flowmasters,K&N,3.27 gears RedSOHC |

I know as of last month w/ my TCCoA club discount, I can get the heads for $570. It would be worth paying the $40 joining fee to save an extra $90-100 if the price is still the same.
PI just stands for "power improved." Thats what Ford called the 99+ 4.6 heads. They will add at least 35+HP, more if you put some P&P work into them of course. ------------------ 2001 SVT Lightning (red): Many mods to come- Let the Vette killer begin to take shape 1997 Thunderbird 4.6L: Dynomax exhaust, Mustang intake tube, SVT Lightning 80mm MAF, Accufab MAF adapter, 7" Auto-physics powerstack filter, ram air, B&M 24,000GVW trans cooler, Custom chip, FMS 9mm wires, many more to come... Get him off that No gears thing. Should be his first mod.
> the 99 headswap complete with cams will net you 35 rwhp at a minimum naturally aspirated. Some claim higher gains > pullies if he isn't going FI > no mention of the K&N IMHO, Best combo if money wasn't an object: FRPP intake FRPP heads p&p SHM prepped shortblock Stage II cams Vortech or another centri S/C That would put a lot of power down. Next mod would be rear tires on a quarterly basis. ------------------ K! Hey Smoke, why do you recommend not using underdrives with a blower?

gears are a must there shouldn't even be a disscussion on that one. they multilply torque. just what the 4.6 needs. most are getting around 45rwhp from ported 99 heads. usually in the 260-270rwhp range. they feel awesome. GET THEM!( alot of guys are running low 13's to high 12's after the head swap, on slicks) oh yea my gas mileage didn't even change, still get 22mpg. good luck.
p.s. beat him over the head with a stick until you convince him about the gears ------------------ 96 stang, ported 99 heads, 99 intake, 99 cams,Steeda power pullies, 373's, 70mm t/b, gutted maf, bassani x-pipe w/cats, ultraflow catback, iat mod, home depot ram air, k@n. fms spings, tri-ax shifter. King Snake -Warner Robbins AFB?
U/D pullies -as I was told- don't function well with S/Cs. You need your normal pullies when installing any S/C. Mine is a Roots Blower. Needed stock pullies. Know several Vortech types that had U/D pullies and had to get stock pullies for the S/C. |

So 700 for the 99+ heads... are there any other mods that are required to make these things work or can he just slap them on like that... also how much would a shop charge for installation? $400?

it doesn't seem to smart of your friend to not want gears. that is like me saying i don't want to go fast or somthing. gears are one of the best mods for a mustang. the headswap breaks down like this: parts 1200, port and polish of heads 600, labor to install 800. the port and polish is optional. and yes, it is worth the money- believe me.
------------------ 97 Mustang GT Rio Red 99 port/polish heads,99 cams,99 intake manifold,Steeda sport springs,Steeda caster/camber plates,Offset steering rack bushings,Steeda subframe connectors,Tokico struts/shocks,Steeda Triax shifter,FRPP clutch,FRPP 3.73 Gears,Pro-M 87 mm mass air,K&N filter,FRPP underdrive pullies,FRPP 9mm plug wires,Steeda timing adjuster,MSD DIS-4 ignition,Aeromotive adjustable fuel pressure regulator,Walbro 190 lph fuel pump,FRPP shorty headers,Bassani offroad x-pipe,Mac cat-back exha |
