Question spool vs posi unit

What is the difference between these 2 and which one would be better for a street driven application?

The difference between the two the spool has no clutches no spider gears it's solid, so it wil not slip going around corners were the the limit-slip has the clutches & the spider gears to alou slipping when turning.Think of it this way when you turn say to the right the left rear tire has to travel futher then the right rear tire with a spool they are turning at the same speed.Sorry so long good luck Tim.

If this is a drag car the spool would be the best choice, as there are no parts that will wear. And they can handle launching with slicks extremly well. But for a street car posi all the way, as long as you get the rear end set up the right way it should last a long time.

A spool is not for the street. It really only for drag racing. If you want to upgrade, try a FMS differential. They work well and don't make a bunch of noise (like an Auburn locker). MM & FF had a great artical about 3 or 4 months ago expaining every different type of differential. You may want to see if you can find it on there web site.

You CANNOT use a spool on the street or any application that involves turning of any kind. The stock Traction-Lok rearend is good until you break the S-clip for the Posi mechanism. One of the best all around rearends I think is the Eaton Posi. It uses stronger coil springs instead of the S shaped spring in the Ford T/L.
