Default '87 witha 4.6l?

I just recently got a 1987 mustang LX 4cyl. So far I've stripped the thing apart and I'm just about ready to paint it.

I've been thinking about what I'm going to do to the engine, and at first I was thinking about putting a 351 in, but a friend(t-bird lover/mechanic) said I should go with a 4.6l V8 DOHC engine. He said they have about 290 HP, and get better gas milege, I looked around a bit and think it looks and sounds.. really sounds better.

He says I need a new tranny to go with it. Is that all I need? I'm talking about bare necessities.

Also, Does anybody has an estimate on the price for the engine(used) and the tranny(Used...)

Thanks for the help.

The only problem with having a 4.6L installed in your vehicle is that you have to have ALL the emissions equipment hooked up. There
will be lots of rewiring and fabrication if you don't use an aftermarket fuel injection management system. A USED 4.6L DOHC can go anywhere from $2500-$3500 from what i've seen, then you can use a T-45 trans behind it. I just bought a '98 Cobra and i love it, but with 305 hp and 300 lb/ft of torque at high rpm's it really makes you appreciate the idea of regearing.
If i were you, i'd go with a 351W or a 351W stroker, real easy to get to 300 horsepower and loads more torque at lower rpm and easy to swap in, if you go carbureted it's very inexpensive (relatively).

Like I said I first thought about putting a 351 in it, I would still consider it too. I know I could check google, but how much power does the 351 have over the 302? A T-45 trans will work with both of those, right?

And also, on average what would gas milege be like(With the 351)?

Still being a newbie, how much work would hooking all the emissions equipment up be? And, an aftermarket fuel injection management system, price?

Thanks, Wobbit

Stick with the 5.0 or 351 much more fur to drive on the street with all the lowend torque. The T-45 only fits the 4.6's you want a T-5 or T-56 6 speed.
The gas milege will be about the same if you go EFI and don't go to big with the cam.
