Buying a used 97-99 GT convertable
Hi everyone,
I am thinking of buying a used GT convertible somewhere in the 1997-1999 range. I was wondering if anyone knows what I should look for? Do any model years suffer from any particular defects? What tends to go wrong first with these cars? Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, xtheowl |

Hey X, I have 96 GT Conv. Same as the 97. Very nice car, no big problems so far in the three years I have had it. But I am quite sure most people on the site will recommend the 99 because it has more power. For more power out of the 96-98 a head swap in recommended. 99 breaths better. Do a search of the site , lots of info avalable.

The 1998 was rated at 225 HP compared to the 96-97 cars with 215HP. The 99 GT has the newer body style and 260HP. If you want performance, go with a 99+ car. MUCH FASTER, especially if you want a convertible.

It all depends on what you plan on doing with the car. If you want a lower price nice looking car get a low milage 97 - 98. If you want the HP then definately go with the 99 or newer. If you want to mod the engine and stay on a budget an older model vert and a few grand of mods can go a long way. I have less than 11 grand in mine!

Look in the spare tire well for signs of water. I looked at a '94 that appeared to be in good shape with the exception of the pond with a tire floating in the trunk. Not sure where the water was coming from... I just said no thanks and walked away.

Thanks for all the info everyone!
I think you've deffinately sold me on the '99. Worth the extra few bucks in my monthly loan payment. Spyder, Thanks for the offer, but I really had my heart set on a stick anyway. V8Mustang, Thanks for the tip, I'll deffinately check for that while i'm out lookin. Anyone else know of any glitches/weak points/recalls intrensic to the 99 GT convertible? Thanks, xto |
