Paint suggestions

I was working on my windshield fluid lines this morning (clogged bad) and while I had the cowl cover off (piece right below the windshield) I had an idea. I wondered what it would look like if I painted it black like my car. It's already black, but it's plastic, not glossy. What do you guys think????

On the cover of the new issue of 5.0 is a red Cobra that has the side view mirrors painted the color of the car. I thought it looked pretty kickass. It's not something you'd notice right off the bat and it's different. I think the cowl would work along those same lines - subtle but different.

I saw that issue and I didn't even notice, although I've thought about doing that also.I figure they are already black and my car is too. I'll probably paint my plastic cowl tomorrow.

Just curious, how are you going to prep the plastic and paint it to get it glossy? This probably seems like a moronic question but I don't do body work and the only painting on cars i've done is touchup.

Not a moronic question at all. To tell you the truth, this was a "fly by night" operation. I didn't put a whole lot of thought into it. I'm the type of person that knows I want something and worries about getting it done later. I guess I'll take it off and bring it to a shop. At the same time, I'll pull my mirrors and have them shoot them as well.

Let me know what they give you estimate-wise because I think I want to do my mirrors. Since my car is Laser Red would doing the cowl look too ricey? I definately want to do the mirrors but would consider the cowl as well. It seems to me these would be subtle little changes that would look cool.

I'll let you know. It won't be for at least a couple of weeks now. I am moving up to Virginia Friday. But as far as it looking ricey, I don't know. Now I am thinking the same thing. I guess it's not so bad since mine is already black. Did you see that blue Cobra in the last Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords? It had the cowl painted silver and I think it looked great. He also had the production # on the front bumper matching the paint. Check it out. It's worth the $4. Besides it had some pretty decent tech articles that were useful too for a change.

Cool. My only take on it not being ricey is that it's not a mod that really stands out. Once you notice it does, but it's not like a park bench wing or anything. Maybe i'll find a cheap cowl in a junkyard or something and do a mock up to see what it would look like. Just keep me posted.

yankee be careful to get all the old wax and cleaning products off the plastic they soak up oils and fish eye if not prep very well. I've seen both the mirrors and the cowl done on a modded v6 looked very classy. Just my $.02. Good luck

I know of a couple people who have had this done on both the cowl piece and the side mirrors.

You have to sand them down smooth first with gradual changes of grit sandpaper (i.e., 200 grit, 400 grit, etc, etc). It's a biotch! Then apply the paint.

It looks really good. Here is a pic of a friends car.
