5 speed trany problems
Im a first time ford owner, bought a 2001 Musatang GT about 6 months ago and about 1 month ago a spring or somthing broken on the pressure plate and, well did quite a bit of damage. had it toed into the dealer which took 10days B4 i got it back and its just not the same car now. There is a slight vibration in the cluth petal, gas petal, brake and shifter. it just feels like crap and the dealer is insisting there is nothing wrong. i have loved the car up to this point but am getting very upset with the quality and level of service im getting from the dealer.
My question is does anyone possibly know what the problem might be, (it feels like something is not balanced or is not installed right) so i can tell the idiots at the dealer what to look for. thanks, any advise would be greatly appreciated, i really want to keep the car but if it is going to be like this from now on im going back to GM |

How did the first incident originate? If it was the result of an overspeed( excessive speed @ a downshift - this is NOT protected by the rev. limiter) there could have been clutch disc damage that they did not fix. Bottom line- there are out of ballance parts and they MUST be fixed to prevent further damage to the trans. long term and to satisfy you short term!

Thanks for the reply, didn't really expect any, but hey thanks alot
The funny thing is no overspeeding, i was just pulling out of my parking lot at work, normally (not getting on it at all) went to stop just before pulling out on to the main road, pushed the clutch petal in, and felt something break and heard a ping and a pop noise, and from then on, it would barely go forward and the trany was grinding a bit. the sick thing about that was, i had it toed to the dealer because i didn't want to make it worse, the next day the service manager called me and said they could find nothing wrong. So that day i went after work and pick up the car and there was definetly something wrong but all the service people had already left for the day, so i drove it home. the drive home (about 25 miles) made the trany problem much worse and of course by the time i got it home it was pretty bad. anyway drove it back to the dealer the next day (getting worse all the time, needless to say i was pretty pissed, and i demanded that they take the damn thing for a ride with me, and then try to tell me nothing was wrong. so they did, and yes this time they agreed, that yah there was definetly a problem. (sorry so long, just tring to give you the whole picture) anyway they did replace a whole bunch of parts including clutch plate, pressure plate etc, (many many prts)now there's that damn vibration, and again the dealer is saying there's nothing wrong. i think north bros. ford is probably the worst dealer in michigan, but since they did the initial repair another dealer will not touch it. sorry about the lengtht of this, but im pretty frustrated and probably need to just contact ford directly. |

Call Ford's Customer Hotline and tell them your concern. Sounds like you are dealing with a dealership that is not willing to try to help fix your problem. Maybe that vibration you are feeling in all the pedals is from the trans mount or engine mounts not being lined up properly. Obviously they had to take the transmission out and maybe when they reinstalled it and torqued everything down, it was not aligned properly.

The repair was obviously not complete ir done properly. You deserve and should get better. The reinstall of the trans may have been botched. I would not worry too much about any residual trans dammage- they can take some slapping ( clutch failure) I dont think you did too much damage because of the care and prompt repair you got on the clutch. Funny thing, the incident occurred from a mild use but the damage to the clutch could have happened in earlier spirited driving. Did they cover this under warranty?

Thanks again for the reply's, i think this is a great meesage board and plan to use it regularly.
I will contact ford hot line, thanks for the suggestion, and yes all was covered under warranty. i'll keep you posted as to what transpires. Since im a first time ford owner i was wondering if GT 5 speeds are perhaps a little prone to clutch and or trany problems. im not gonna say that i have babyed the car but i havent really been that ruff on it either. if it can't take a little abuse than it would seem pointless to own this kind of performance vehicle. i have owned other brands of 5 speed cars and had not had these types of problems. i also had heard that GT's 5 speeds for 2001 come with a re-designed trany does anyone know if that is true ? |

Im not sure about a re-designed tranny for 2001 but i do know ford went with a Tremec tranny for 99 and above 5-speeds.
i've had ford 5-speeds in the past and none made as much gear noise as my 99 i have now.Plus after countless visits to the dealer i still have a rattle in the dam tranny at idle. If the latest 5-speeds are re-desigd i'm going back to demand one of those under warranty. later. ----------------------- 99 gt Bassani x , magnaflows, nitto DR best et..13.89 @ 100 mph |

THe rattle sound your hearing is probably the release bearing. Seems like most Mustangs have that annouying rattle in the tranny at idle, but I havent seen/experienced any problems that arise from that.
The T-45 has its problems, but the clutch and pressure plate arent regularly one of them. I would think they replaced the whole clutch assembly when they did the pressure plate, but one should never assume anything. Is there another dealership you can take your car to? It doesnt have to be the dealership you bought your car from. FORD is real good in comparison to other domestic car manufactures when it comes to warranty stuff. ------------------ 64 1/2 "D" code Red Mustang Coupe. 289, C4, Mallory duel point. yea, they replaced the clutch, plate and supposedly the bearing. The rattle may not do any harm but its just dam annoying. Eventually the cars going back but definetly to another dealer. thats for sure.
I can't believe this is not a topic more often if this is a common problem. I guess i can live with it for now as long as it can pull some strong time slips at the track. I still think the T-45 or at least the one i have makes way to much gear noise decelerating in 4th and 5th. I'm comparing this to earlier T-5's later. ---------------------- 99 gt Bassani x , magnaflows, nitto DR best et..13.89 @ 100 mph |

The vibration might be the flywheel. Who knows if they dropped it. Was it resurfaced?
I'm just guessing here... |

Your opinion acually seems the most logical.
After looking at the dealer write up, as far as what had been replaced, there is a comment made about the fly-wheel and it states that it was cut. Im assuming this means it was re-surfaced. Thanks for the responce, Im gonna take the thing back to the dealer hopfully this week, wish me luck Quote:

Hmm I havent had some of the problems everyone has discused so far*crosses fingers*
Mine did have alittle gear whine when I bought it. Now since racing it hard it now sounds as if I have a 8-71 super charger under the hood 1st, 2nd 3rd and 5th all whine. Basically mine is very noisy in 1st with it being barely noticable in 5th. ------------------ My '00 GT 2000 GT Laser red-5speed,MAC Cold Air, MAC 2 1/2" Cat-Back, 3.27gears, Pro-5.0 shifter, Weld Draglite's 15x5 and 15x10, 275/50-15 DragT/A's, 165R15 front, BBK Underdrive pullies, BBK offroad X-pipe with Dynomax super converters Best Quarter mile run to date: 13.296@101.99(9-9-01) Best MPH 102.42(9-9-01) Best 60' 1.844sec. |

I don't hear anything over my exhaust but concerning the T-45 I think it's way better than the old T-5's. I went through 3 or 4 of them in my old car like they were nothing and I'm still on the stock T-45 with 60K miles and nearly 500 passes on it, allot of them 6K RPM dumps on slicks. 4th gear is wounded but still hangs in there at the track.

Oh I think the T-45 is way better then T-5 also. Mine makes noise but other then that it shifts perfect and isnt binding anywhere.
I had a T-5 in a '85 Camaro which I destroyed first time at track, 6k was just a tad to much for the poor thing to handle at launch |
