Hey Mustang92!!!
Mustang92, i hope you read this message....
I saw your post about the 4.10 gears..and i saw that you have steeda UD pulleys and a TA adjuster. I have a 2001 GT and i just bought steeda UD pulleys and the TA adjuster. im about to install them and i already got my tank full of 92 octane. I wanna know something and since you have the parts on your car already... What timing can i safely do on my (otherwise) stock engine? i heard 12-13 with 92 octane is max safest, but what timing do you think is good? also, is it safe to throw a bottle of octane booster into the tank along with 92 octane gas? with the octane booster, could i bump it up another couple degrees? Also, how difficult is it to install 4.10 gears, and where can i get my speedometer recalibrated? i dont wanna pay $400 for an install and i dont wanna pay $150 for the computer. i got lots of tools and have messed with lots of cars but ive never done a rear end gear install. Please letme know either reply to this thread or email me at blueshuttle@earthlink.net thanx!! Blue01GT

Blue, I'm not Mustang92 but I can give you some input to your questions. The T/A on my car is set at 14 degrees. I run 92 octane with no pinging issues whatsoever. I definetly felt a real noticeable gain in low end torque with the T/A set at 14. Most guys seem to use about 14 to 15 degrees. So I see your thinking about 4.10's. From what I hear thats a awesome mod, really helps with acceleration. I got 4.10's sitting in my room and I am looking to install them soon. I've been calling around to get a good deal. One quote I got was $500 for labor (yeah right). Another place I called was only $300 for labor so that's where I'm probably going. As far as recalibrating the speedometer after the gear install, you could call Dallas Mustang they have a device that goes for about $100 and allows you to calibrate the speedometer by tapping into some wires and setting a few dip switches. Hope this helps for now.

black281 pretty much answered your questions. Just remember more timing is not always better, our cars stop making more power at 15* or so after that you start to lose power. I've had mine up as high as 18* on the dyno with 93 octane with not detonation but the car made the same power as it did at 10*. 14-15* was nearly identical on the dyno so that is where I tend to keep it set at.
Gears are something you want a professional installer to do unless you've done that job before. I get mine done for $175 locally but average seems to be in the $200-250 range usually. If you know someone that works at Ford they sometimes will do the job on the side for pretty cheap. Bill

Adding octane booster will do nothing but slow you down. Higher octane fuel burns slower than lower octance fuel this is why supercharged cars use it to prevent detonation. When a car uses a higher octane fuel than what is needed it is burning just as slow and thus reducing power.

allright, so I will forget octane booster!!!
Allright, if you can believe it, i got more questions!! I looked under my car, (2001 GT 5spd) and i dont have a center drain bolt on my tranny, which means i do NOT have the 3650 instead i got the side bolt So what tranny do i have? ive heard a few different names like "t-45" and "t-3550" but what tranny does my early2001 GT got? i wanna know so i can buy the correct short-throw shifter... Also, you are gonna be mad but i decided instead to get 3.73s. see , this is my daily driver and i am often on the freeway late at night and i dont want to be at 3200rpm when i set the cruise at 75. SO im doin 3.73s for now. Well anyway, i have a best time of 14.56 at the Los Angeles County Raceway. Its 2900ft high, and about 45-50 degrees outside, bone stock. I backed it up with a 14.63. So this weekend i am installing a triple hitter of: 3.73 gears, Steeda underdrive pulleys, and Steeda timing adjuster. after i install everything, with 92 gas and 14 degrees on the TA, what times can i expect when i go to the track? will i break into the 13s? should i buy a helmet? Please give me some insight, i want to be prepared... thanx!
