Default Drag racing in a 2001 GT

I was wondering how I should shift my automatic 2001 Mustang GT. Should I just leave it in drive, or should I manualy shift 1 to second? And also should I have overdrive on or off?

Sorry this may seem like a silly question but I just wanted to make sure.....

I always leave mine in D, with OD on, and never shift manually, and I seem to do alright. Just let the tranny do its job.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one S/DWarrior. In my experience shifting manually produced better ET's. The problem with leaving it in drive is that the computer shifts at the redline which is too late because a stock GT stops making power at about 4800 RPM and then hp starts dropping off. For the launch, do a SHORT burnout and brake torque to 2200 rpm. When the third amber lights, release the brake and stand on the loud pedal. It may seem like you will red light by going on the third amber but you have anticipate the green not wait for it. My first run I waited to see the green but that got me 1.6 reaction time. Now I can consistently get in the .5's (.500 is a perfect light).

i have a 2001 GT auto that i manualy shift went the tach reads 4900 i push to the next next gear. The computer will take about a half of second to catch up and the trans will shift at about 5800 (were peak hp is in a '01.) This should yield the best quarter mile times, it does for me. I only stall at 1800 rpms and pull 1.9-2.0 60ft times in street tires at 26psi. But that might not work for you. Look at your 60 foot times that will tell you how much tire spin you have if your 60 ft is above 2.3 or above than drop you launch rpm should be able to get it down to atleast 2.1
