gears ratio
I just bought a 97 GT. I was wondering what type of gear ratio(axle) it has and what would be a better ratio for it( if there is one. This is a daily driver.

Should be 2.73's stock. Crawl under the back of your car and check the differential cover. There is a small tag on it that will say something like "2L 73".
Most people here will say that 3.73's are the best gears for your application. They take some getting used to but I wouldn't trade em. ------------------ '96 GT 5-speed,K&N air filter,Roush Cold Air kit,80mm MAF,Mac Cat-Back,Mac Pro Chamber H-Pipe, FMS 3.73's, FMS 70mm TB, Steeda Tri-ax, March U/D pulleys T-Bone's '96 GT |

Ditto. Although 3.27s were an option, but it really doesn't matter. 3.73s are a better gear for the SOHC.

If your car already has 3.27's then 3.73's will be hardly notcible. I just upgraded my 95 from 3.27's to 3.73's and if I didn't know the mechanic real well I would have been removing the differential cover to check to see if he changed them, seriously. That is not a significant jump in ratio, be prepared. Though I woouldn't recommend anything more than 3.73's for street driving anyway, my cars with aode runs at around 2600 rpms at 65 mph, just right IMO.
I would for now put the money elsewhere. Blown 5.0s and 4.6s are very different cars.

Yeah, or a compansator. You can get the gear for about $15. Just look through any number of Mustang magizines and there will be a few dozen people selling them.
Installion is a 5 minute job. |

Yeah I know, but still the 3.27 to 3.73 difference will be hard to feel regardless. I just wanted to let him know because I was expecting a neck snapping difference and it was definitly not. |
