Default New Car Will Be a Stang

I am looking at purchasing a new or newer GT. What year is the fastest stock. I have been a camaro/chevy fan but with the death of the camaro I am looking into a stang. Is there a year that will run as good as the LS1 or LT-1 which run's 13's stock? Is there a specific year I should avoid? What is everyone paying for their ride?

Cool 13's mustang

glad to see that you now are looking to get in a real sport car
( heheheh) . If you are looking for a stock stang to run 13's you are looking to get a Cobra and any year 96 to 2002 will run 13's. Now for GT stang the 99 and above come with the most horse power

96 to 98 GT = 215 to 225 horse stock
99 to 02 GT = 260 stock

96 to 98 cobra = 305 stock
99 to 2002 cobra = 320 stock

2003 cobra = 390 stock

So if you want a stock car that run's 13's you can see that you will have to get a Cobra , but with a 99 & above Gt with a couple mods you can be in the 13's.

Now for a 96 to 98 Cobra your looking any where from 15,000 to 19,000, that depends on the car .

Now for a 99 and above Gt looking around 15,000 to 24,000 , once again depends on the car.

You're probably going to unleash the "5.0 vs 4.6" debate again. I personally would tell you to get a Gen 2 4.6 Mustang (1999 up), they may cost more to work on and make faster, but; IMO they come fairly powerful stock (265HP). If you find a used Cobra for sale that will be your close cousin to LT-1 LS-1 type power stock-to-stock. If you want to make a lot of power cheaper, then find a 5.0 powered stang, they are close to what you are used to with the Center Cam OHV type engines, all the new stangs (GT/Cobra) from 96-up are SOHC/DOHC. I would just say to spend some time in the Readers Rides section of this site and look through the different types of stangs represented here.... There are a lot of different years, types, models to choose from. You can make your own decision and see what routes others have taken. Also, dig through the posts on here for certain year models to see what kind of TSB's and defects they have. What ever model/year you get, there's a way to make it just as fast and powerful as another... all it takes is time, money and patience.. good luck with your stang. I pay 150.00/mo insurance on my car, the car itself is fully paid for, I get about 25MPG on the highway w/AC on.

It has to be a GT for Price Reasons. It might be a 2001 or 2002, but I can't say. I do know it will not be a 5.0 in any shape or form. Ith as to have some form of a warranty since it is replacing my 1986 Camaro. This will be my frist stang, I was looking at a 2001 Camaro, but the prices are still to high compared to a new(er) stang. Plus my wife loves the looks of the stang a lot more.

Note that many of the 99 and 2000 GTs have windsor blocks while 2001s and 2002s have Romeo blocks. Differences between the two are number of head and main bolts and some say windsor is stronger and better for more power.

Go to Also 2002 GTs apparently have different computers from all older model mustangs. Has been causing some supercharged 2002s problems with tuning. I believe it is all being ironed out now, though. I am in the same boat as Former86camaro. Always drove GM and liked stock GM power. Went to Mustang for styling and huge aftermarket. No doubt, the longevity of the mustang design has been proven. Just waiting to get the ATI procharger 10lb kit for my 2002 GT. Ain't driving fun?

ya, my 86 camaro with 180K is running 14.9, I still have yet to toss the headers on and recently put a doubble roller on. I am not sure if I will, but I bet that will bring me into the stock gt class and this car is 16 years old. Like you I am looking at stangs for the HUGE aftermarket and the fact they are still being made.
