Post gutting the mass air?

There used to be a write up at mustangworld that outlined the way to cut out the extra metal that is in the mass air, and they claimed some minor benefits in doing so. I even saw some posts around the net in which people mentioned they had done this. Now, though, the directions are gone. Has anyone done this procedure, or does anyone know why the directions are gone, i.e. it is not good for your car, etc? Thanks.
