Shifting with AUTO transmission
Is it safe to shift from 1st to 2nd to drive when launching at the track? Is this safe or normal to do. I've never really ran on the track and only leave it in drive when hot rodding from light to light. What is the recommended launch procedures when you have an auto? Also, what performance mods can you put in the 98 stock auto tranny? any help would be appreciated!
Later! See you at the Bristol FFW true street event!

Everything I have read about the Auto's starting in 1998 is that it is ok to shift up and down from 1-2 2-1, that it won't hurt the tranny. Infact it even says you can manual shift the tranny all the time and it won't ever hurt it. Unless you try and do something stupid like downshift into 1st at about 80 or so.. There was a link to an article (very detailed too) about the AOD/E 4R70W and like tranny, they showed real pics about the transmission and how to build it up to support about 800HP w/o failure...

I know when i shift at the tree i send the RPMs up to 2,100 and keep the car in 1st then soon as i hit the 4,800 mark it hit 2nd and then just at the 1/8th mile line is where I hit 3rd around 5,200 and i cosistantly run a 2.1 60ft with a 1/8th mile time of 9.3 at 75.**mph so basically i manually shift the car I do it even on the street because if you keep it in Drive and stomp on it it sends the RPMs to 5,500 or something and the car runs out of power in the area at least mine does..lol..I'm working on a shift kit know and a 2500 stall w/4.10 gears this should get me in the high to mid 8's in the 1/8th hopefully
Hope this helps |

I know what you mean about that. When I nail mine in D with the O/D off it does the same thing. Why though?, what's the point of it trying to spool up that high then to pull into 2nd. Mine pulls almost to 6000 before it will shift... way out of my top power band... Sometimes, when I manual shift all the way, when I am at WOT and shifting from 2nd to 3rd, no matter when I shift it, it will keep in 2nd until about 5500-6000RPM then shift... I can feel the car slowing down, and I waste time... I just wish the stupid thing would shift instantly like my truck's T-700 transmission did. I am thinking about the 2500 Stall and other parts when I go to have it rebuilt.
