engine cleaner

anyone here recommend a good engine cleaner? maybe some do's and don'ts?

I use non-foaming spray Gunk. Apply to a warm engine, let it set for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with a garden hose. Dry with compressed air if you have a compressor.

you dont think rinsing a hot/warm engine with cold water would run the risk of cracking something? also, no need to worry about any of the electronics getting wet or Gunked?

WARM ENGINE, not HOT.... Gunk works better on warm grease and grime.

RINSE with a garden hose nozzle, not a high pressure unless it's a real greasy spot and you need to really hit it.

Blow off with an air hose. If you don't have a compressor, just let the water evaporate. Wipe off the plug wires with a rag. Once in a while I have had to pull the distributor cap and wipe the moisture out with a rag.

I've been doing it this way for for years. Maybe someone else can suggest other ways.

nah... You guys got it all wrong..... This is how you wash your engine!!!.......you don't even have to pop your hood or do any manual labor. Forget all those de-greasers, compounds, wash clothes...... Do it just like this, the way I did last year::

Wait till there's a flood, then drive your stang head on into a 2ft deep water puddle. That will be sure to soak every part of your engine, and since your car is nice and hot you will get a free steam cleaning as well.. This is sure to take all the grime and dirt off your engine and leave it sparkling clean for you. Plus, you get the added bonus of having your MAF washed out as well, and we all know how hard it is to clean that pesky MAF sensor.

Oh yeah, btw... Cleaning your engine this way, for some reason, always causes it to make loud knocking sounds afterwards... That's not just squeaky clean, it's knocking clean!!!! :-D

Spray a warm - not hot - engine with with Simple Green, let sit for 5 minutes then hose off................Dry with compressed air if you have it available or wipe everything off so it doesn't leave water spots........

will try the flood method, it sounds the easiest...lord knows we get enough rain in mobile, alabama.....JUST KIDDING!

i am just paranoid about spraying water into the engine compartment....too many electronic doodads to screw up...but hell, if noone else has had any problems, i guess its okay. its probably the way detail shops do it anyway

I bought some stuff called "Steam" in a black can made by Gumout. I got it from Advance Auto Parts. Havent used it yet but heard it works real good. When I hose mine off I'll probably try to cover some of the electrical parts and go back later with a rag and detail what I covered up.
