Post Engine VIN #

Isnt the 4.6 engine VIN# for a mustang a
"W" OR "V"(Cobra)? Why in the world do I have an "X" instead of a "W" ? I have a 97 GT convertible. I would greatly appreciate any help on this.

My friends '97 GT Coupe has the same "X". He bought it used and we haven't been able to find out much about it. His seems to run quicker than most of the other GT's in our area so maybe there's something to that X. His also has a Steeda sticker under the hood but we couldn't find anything that looked aftermarket... any ideas?

Question

Now I am curious again. I posted this question last year when I got my 96 GT Convertible. Mine also has the X instead of the W for the standard SOHC 4.6. I just now called the local Ford dealership and the guy at the service counter had no idea either. Surely there is someone out there with some info.

Just addin' to the confusion 'cause I'd really like to know now.

There was an article that I read about a year ago that explained what it meant. I will have to look it up and then I will post it. I have a '98 convertable and it is an "X" also...

Cool

GaryDawg,
Thanks for checking on that. I get some of the mags (5.0/ Mustang Monthly/ Mustang and Fords/ and the occasional MM & FF). If it was in one of those I might be able to help look. I am sure there is a simple explanation for it - I'm just extremely curious now.
Thanks again

I went to AllData to look up a TSB. The only motor selection available for a '98 GT was an X VIN. I'm curious too ;-)
