Need transmission help fast!
Earlier today I noticed 1st, 3rd and 5th gears would just slip out of gear. Now I can't even get in either of those gears. What could the problem be? A friend said it may be the synchromesh.
Your advice is appreciated. |

Sounds like you have improperly adjusted shifter stops, something wrong with the clutch system, or bad shift forks inside the transmission.
Do you have an aftermarket shifter with stops on it? If so, that would be the first place I would check. The next would be trying to get it into those gears while stationary. When it was popping out of gear it sounds like you weren't getting it far enough into gear to hold. |

Very awesome. As a side note, it's really hard on the syncros and gears if you have the tranny popping out of gear. Now you know what to look for if it happens again. Try to get it fixed ASAP if it happens again. Your tranny will thank you for it!
No repair bill. Gotta love that! |

Yeah it is very good news. I was prepared to park it until next year if it was a tranny problem. I spent so much on Ford Racing heads and intake and SHM cams.
It was very hard on the car pulling from a dead stop in 2nd gear. What is the purpose of the "stop nuts" on the triax?? Are they really required? |

They are to keep you from hyperextending the cast alumium shift forks inside your transmission. Shift fork breakage and damage was a leading killer of the Borg Warner/Tremec T-5's, and I'm sure it's the same with the very similar T-45.
Just keep those stops adjusted properly. One of the biggest reasons everybody recommends aftermarket shifters is to save the tranny from hard part damage. Pulling away from a stop in 2nd gear isn't too bad. Hopefully you're not running the old 2.73:1 rear gears. The clutch may not like it too much, but as long as you're doing it nicely, you shouldn't encounter a lot of additional wear or glazing. I'd much rather do a $300 hi po clutch than a $1000-1500 tranny. |
