Rear End Gears
I have a '97 Cobra and need to replace the ring and pinion due to wear. Does anyone know what the factory gearing is? I cannot find it in my manual or supplemental manual. I would like to go a notch lower.

They should be 3.27 if your car is a 5spd not to sure about an auto but that is the factory option.

Which gears would you recommend? I was thinking of 3.73 but that may be a little to low. Maybe I should go with 3.55.

Go with at least the 3.73s. Most guys say 4.10s for Cobras.

I like my 3.73's but I also like the 4.30's in my Probe Gt. I would go with 4.30's if I had the chance to do it again. The high revving nature of the DOHC can easily manage it and 5th gear driving on the highway and around town would be very entertaining I would think.

All cobras are 5-speeds. Go with the 3.73s. Especially if it's your daily driver and you want to keep some descent gas mileage. 4.10s if it sees alot of track work and you don't mind sucky mpg's. The 3.73s would be the perfect one's actually. Also to tell what you have in your 8.8" look at the back side of the differential. There will be a metal tag on it. I believe it's the second line on the tag that will tell you your gear ratio. It'll say something like 3L27 if you have the 3.27s. The L stands for the positrac. 3L08 or 2L73, or if no posi then like 3 27, 3 08 or 2 73. 3.55s would be pretty good too but with your DOHC I'd recommend the 3.73s. Good luck.

I have had every gear mentioned in this post. I am running 4.56's and I checked the mileage and it is 18.5 mpg. when I had 4.30's I got 21.5, 4.10's = 23 mpg, and 3.73's netted me 25 even. I run a N/A 97 cobra with 275 Nitto's. I think if you run 3.73 gears and a new Z-28 lines up next to you at a light you would be in trouble. 4.10 maybe not! 4.30 and you can beat him!!! Rpm with 4.30 at 65 mph was 2400 not that bad!!!
