Which brand of gears is best?
I am thinking of installing a set of 3.73s in my snake. Would you go with the FMS or some other brand like Richmond? Or would a cheaper set be just as good?

I would go with what ever you can get. Most gears like Richmond are made by Zoom and they sell them to other companys like Richmond and Pro 5.0. Some say the FMS don't whine and others do, well it's all in how you set them up.

I have the FMS and they don't whine - buddy of mine bought Zoom and they whine a little. Both were set up by the same shop - both are currently running fine, whine or not.
Hope this helps! Good luck. ------------------ 96GT, Vortech S-Trim,C&L 80mm mass air,30# injectors, MSD DIS-4, 3.73, Bassani X, Flows, 70mm TB, Subs, Mega-Bite Jr.Lower rear Ctrl Arms, FMS Uppers, Ripper, and a bunch of other $tuff I can't seem to remember! |

FMS and the others cost the same amount if you look around some. I don't think I've heard of anyone having whining with FMS, and I have heard a few people have minor problems with Zoom or Richmond gears. I would go with the FMS.

It is definitely true how you set up the gear set when installing. But, in any experience I've had with Richmond, they WHINE. It doesn't matter how you set them up, they definitely whine, and bad, too. But with things as simple as gears, go with the maker of the car, FMS. FORD makes them, and correct for just about every car. When talking superchargers and other bigger products, is where Ford is lacking. I got 4:30's in mine and have absolutely no whine or any noise for that matter.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I'll stick with my initial tendancy to go with the FMS. Ok, another question: should I use a synthetic gear oil like Mobil 1 or stick with OEM? I know I have to add the OEM friction modifier to whatever I use.

I have always used synthetic oil when I change any part that requires the use of oil, i.e., transmission fluid, rear-end fluid, etc. I figure, if you have the parts opne, why settle for ordinay stuff, when you can put in the best stuff.
