What kind of axle is in a 98 gt and why is it good or bad

If I understand what you're asking, its the 28 spline axles that's been in all the GTs and live axle Cobras for some time now. The 31 spline SVO part is better, but the 28 is fairly strong and will serve its purpose till you get WELL up in the torque department.

Well, habit. SVO is Special Vehicle Operations, which is now FRPP, Ford Racing Performance Parts.
