3.73 v. 4.10 Gears

I have a 96 mustang gt and i want to put a set of gears on it but there are a lot of mixed opinions of which ones to get. Some say the 3.73 and some say the 4.10. Which ones do you recommend for a daily driven stang. And what would the rpms be like around 70? I also would like to know how much you think it would cost to install them. Thanks.

In my opinion with daily driven I'd get 3.73's. A lot of power hungry guys will tell yah 4.10's

Nothing wrong with that, just be prepared to combat the traction in some ways. Anyhow, good news, Pro 5.0 3.90 gears Good luck man.

One other thing tireburner pointed out...where are the 3.90 speedo gear lol?

3.73's should be about 1000rpms above what you are now. And I think 4.10's are about 1250 or so rpms above. There are plus to both. More get up and go with the 4.10's and more gas miliage with the 3.73's. No much more gas. It just depends on what you want.

how can that be that would put me over 4000rpms @80 when the cars I have been in with 4.10s are around 3100rpm and as for the mpg if you can keep your foot out of it all the time you might lose 1mpg

Unless your '96 is modded enough that your power curve has been moved up in the rev range, 3.73's are the best gear for you. The reason alot of people recommend 4.10s in '99+ GT's is that they make peak power at higher rpms than a 96-98.
As for calculating what your rpms will be, it's a simple ratio. Just look at what your rpms are now at a given speed and multiply that by the new gear ratio divided by the old ratio. For example:
2500rpm x (3.73/3.27) = new rpm at given speed.

I actually still have the stock rear gears - for a while I was having to commute 100 miles each way a couple times a week for work so I never changed them. I will be putting some 3.73s in soon - I'm getting a blower and don't want to have to put it in 5th to finish the 1/4. Newer stick shift GTs I've seen with 4.10s rev slightly over 3K at freeway speeds.

I turn 2950 rpm's with 4.10 gears..also, unless you plan running faster than 131 mph in the 1/4 you will still be in 4th gearBesides with 4.1 gears your 5th gear will now pull like your 4th gear used to...figure on loosing 3 miles lper gallon on the fwy.....by the way my speed at 2950 rpm's is 75 mph.

Chico - is the 131mph in 4th you are talking about assuming the Cobra redline? Don't forget that a GT's redline is 5800.

That is not for you. You have different stock gears than the 1996. The 1996 has 2.73's and the 2000 have I THINK 3.27's. It will not be a thousand for you. I meant for the 2.73's to 3.73's. Sorry did not mean to confuse you.

No you are reading that right. Just to make every thing easy look at your rear and it has a little tag on it. It should say weather it is 2.72, 3.08, 3.27, or 12.13(J/K). Than do the formual given before. Just look at what your rpms are now at a given speed and multiply that by the new gear ratio divided by the old ratio. For example:
2500rpm x (3.73/3.27) = new rpm at given speed.

It is the best way to find RPMS. Also if you go to some of the analyziers you can but what rpms at what speed you want and it will tell you what is the best gears to get.

I thought the autos had a 5800 rpm redline and the 5-speeds have a 6250 red line cause I shift mine at around 5900-6000

The rev limiter is at 6250 on the GT, but the redline is 5800. With my bolt-ons I do shift at 6K...

I bought my 99 GT in Dec. There were some mod done that I can see. But driving at 60 mph with 26 inch tires is around 2800 to 2900rpms in 4th gear. I don't now if the gears has been change. www.ring-pinion.com web site calculator claims it is a 3.73. To think if this is true and I did'nt even know it. Performance is great and gas miliage is fine. I don't have a base to compare to, Going from 3.27 to 3.73. What do you guys think?

3:73's for a manual and 4:10's if you have an automatic...

As Blue stated, the above combo's match your 96's powerband.

just curious is the top gear the same in the AOD and the 5-speed? If it is wouldn't the converter allow more RPM than the 5-speed? 3.73 - auto and 4.10 - manual? Correct me if this seems wrong.
