Default 02' GT 4.10's with Auto

I have the 02' GT with auto trans.. I was out cruising last night trying to get some seat time learning the car and to my shock on the stock street tires I cant do a Burnout without power breaking the car. ... seriously ! The car runs decent and best time so far I have run is a 9.3 1/8 mile. translates to 14.4 - 14.5 1/4 mile.
So the obvious upgrade I'm thinking is Gear swap to 4.10's... I know this has been asked 100 times, but

Times I can expect with just a gear swap over stock will be how much? Plse no estimates as many as you have done the gear swap lets see some real numbers.

Will the 4.10's pull harder no matter if its a 25 roll punch or is there an area the stocks are faster?

A set of gears in these cars are always a good upgrade! Tires not spinning is a good thing. My '01 went 13.8 in the 1/4mile changing the trans functions in the EEC took 0.23 seconds out of the car...

I agree with Randy, tire spinning looks cool on the street, but you can beat a 5 speed out of the hole because you can stand on it and he has to soft pedal so it doesnt spin. Not only that, but have you priced a set of 17" tires lately? My 97 is on its 4th set!

I'm curious if this part is useable in my auto trans..
HERE

If this changes the 1st, 2nd ratios and leaves the overdrive gearing alone it would be exactly what myself and probably alot of peopel are looking for...
Can someone please advise.....

Are you running with the traction control disabled? Believe it or not, but the traction control can slow you down considerably. The way it achieves traction control is by modulating the rear brakes, ever so quickly. This saps to-the-ground horsepower like you wouldn't believe. So if you aren't running with the traction control disabled, give it a try.

The M-7398 kit won't work in your '02. Your car is equipped with the AODE transmission, not the AOD. You'll need to get the gear set from a 4R70W to get the same wide ratios provided by the 7398 kit.

Ok, thxs for the reply.... and to answer your question (yes) I had traction control off.
I think the wide ratio trans gear changes is the perfect way for me to go.. I wont have the drone off the higher revs on the highway.
I'm going to look for a part number now.... I'll post back if I need help locating this gear set.. Thxs

You're not going to see much change with the wide ratio kit at highway speeds (as you said). I think the difference in overdrive is only a .70 to .67 change. The wide ratio really affects the first gear 2.40 vs 2.84. That helps on the initial acceleration but also causes a larger drop on the 1-2 shift. If you're really looking for the off-the-line performance enhancement, rear gears are the way to go. For the AODE, I'd go 4.10's absolute minimum, 4.30's being a better choice IMHO.

I have a 2000 GT with 4.10s and Auto and I have to tell you at times I think that I have too much rear gear in it. I drive on the highway everyday to work and @ 70mph I am at about 2650rpms. Dont get me wrong I love the gear change but the gas prices need to go down!!

Johnster25: how much did you lose on gas milage, i have been thinking about getting a set of gears, but was concerened about gas milage, right now im usually turning 2500 RPMs anyways because im going 75, but any idea what your loss out on the highway is?

I used to get between 200 and 250 on 3/4 of a tank and now I get between 150 and 175 per 3/4. I have only had the car up to 90 since and it still has plenty of go left. Dont get me wrong I love the gear, but if you have a lot of hiway travel I really would suggest 3.73s IMHO. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact me.

go 3:73 if you do lots of highway comuting, go 4:10 if you want more of the line and race very little. Go 4:30's if you want the real deal and like to race. If you want gas milage get a four banger, we do own sports cars ya know!
