Default How Fast Have You Had Your Mustang?

What is the fastest anyone here has had their mustang? I only had mine up to 115. Didn't want to push my luck, that and the motor only had about 700 miles on it. Thanks for the feedback.

I pinned the needle at 150 and it was still slowly pulling. This was on a downhill 3 lane freeway with no traffic. I would not do it again though.

Also, at this point I only had bassani x, mufflers, pulleys, and a K&N filter. Havent pushed it since the 4.10 gears went in.

4.10 gears will help you in the quarter but NOT on top end. All the cars I had with 4.10's would go through the quarter fast but top end sucked (120ish).

And gas mileage sucks at high speeds...........

Well, I felt a great gain from the C&L on the GT, and I felt a great gain from the Mac on the cobra. I dont know how each part would work on the opposite car.

BTW, my mileage does blow with the 4.10's!! Went from the low 20's into the mid teens!!!

150-160 in the 88GT/87GT. It's good for about 135-140mph on a warm day. Really goes to beat hell when it's -20* out though. Fastest run ever was on a pretty steep downhill on I80 in Iowa. Long stretch that had me using 5th!!!! with 2.73's cause I ran out of gear in 4th. If the tach was right (it was obviously wrong, lol), I was doing 172mph on H rated retreads. Ah to be young and completely stupid. I was probably doing 160, anyway. The 88 saw 140-150 quite regular I would say. I've only topped the 87 out a couple of times.

Hell, I'll reminisce a little.

1977 Mustang II Fastback. 302 2V C4 auto. 105mph until the muffler was ripped off in an accident. Then the ultimate land stang record was achieved with a 117mph run. Hehe.

1988 Mustang LX Hatch. 2.3L A4LD auto. 110mph or so? It was done. Wind it all the way out in 3rd, then let up so it will shift into O/D, and put it back down almost all the way to the floor, just enough not to get it to kick back into drive.

1988 Mustang LX Hatch. Same as above.

2002 Mustang GT. 125mph. I've only been above 100mph once. I don't really like beating on the new car? Seems strange, but that's the deal.

135 MPH @ about 4800 RPM. I was going to take a pic of the speedo but was to scared to let go of the wheel. Done this a few times on a very safe area road. Still have not topped out. What is the top out/rev limmiter for the 98?

P.S. - Had the top down every time!!

140mph. The car actually pulls 5th gear now with the stock rear gear, but usually there's just too much traffic around here to safely go over 100. According to those things they put on the side of the road that tell you how fast you are going my speedo is dead on; I've got slightly taller than stock tires out back so it makes up for the way stock speedos read high.
Also had my '79 Pace Car up over 4K rpm in 3rd with a C4 and 2.47 gears out back one time racing a Challenger, but couldn't tell how fast that was because of the 80mph stock speedo...

We have a road that has been called "Rubber Plant Road" by the local racers..It's a long, no side entry, two lane road that's about 2 miles long. It goes between two oil plants in this area and the speed limit on it is about 65-70, there's never anyone on it, and it's flat and you can see all the way to the end. This is the road everyone goes to to drag on it. It's kinda neat cause the road has overhead pipelines on it, it's cool to watch them fly by at about 70 (hehe). On this road I pulled the speedo to 140, then i had to slow down to about 65 to take the curve to get up onto the highway. There's not enough straight road in my area (that's not policed) to get much fast than that....

Hmm, my old 5.0 94 GT I had to 120mph before my girlfriend (now soon to be fiance, if I could ever spell that word ) yelled at me to slow down and that the car I was racing wasn't even visible anymore.

My Cobra? Umm... about 80mph. Haha, everything was finished by then and I haven't felt the need.....yet.

Default 5.0 power

My Dad got his 88 GT up around 140. He had to have one of his friends whose a cop shoot him with radar due to the 80mph speedo.

I am kinda suprised at nothing much over 150...... my RSX-S tops out in 5th at 8200 RPM at 144. prolly get 148 with my friends intake and if I stripped my stereo out again.

does the stang just not have tall enough gears? is it the size? weight? because the RSX has less power, but also less weight and overall size...... kinda confused as to why so very few over 150 except down hills......

There are 2 limits on the newer stangs for top end

1. Those good for nothing scoops all over the car and bad aerodynamic become very challenging at speeds of 145MPH +
2. 5th gear is very tall. When I run at 200km/h (~120MPH) the RPMs sit at 3500rpm. If we could redline fifth gear (in a vaccum) it would reach a speed of ~325km/h which is damn close to 200MPH.

I brought mine up to 245km/h ... do the math.

Take a car like a 2001 911 Carrera... it is very sleak, and has just a tiny bit more power than our cars. The limit on those cars are much higher simply because they are windtunnel tested to reach em...

I had a buddies 2001 911 Turbo up to 278km/h and it was stiff and ready for some more.... even in 6th gear.

then why not panel off the vents or just shave them? they look nice but if they are really creating a ton of drag then get rid of them. though I guess it is all part of the style. we shal see what I end up doing when I get my GT, if I can sell my damn RSX-S

I drove 145mph on a remote road hear in Virginia but got off of the gas because the road ahead had traffic on it.
I know my car won't do this on the open road but I pulled a dyno top speed run of 172mph at 6,000rpm. I have the dyno sheet framed at the house.

In all the Xpressway races I've been in it's not how much top end you have its how fast you can reach a decent speed. I don't know if I've ever have been over 140 mph in a race on the expressway. And don't know if I ever max'ed out my car I just don't have 3 to 5 miles to see if thats all its got. I do know the mags did on the 87 and it's 150. This engine who knows but it seems to have great mid-range if you keep it between 3k and 5500 and it pulls strong.

2001 True Blue Mustang GT

The fastest I've gone is 135 when I was racing a Cadillac STS. I redlined out fourth and hit fifth and looked down and was hitting 135, I let off of it because the guy in the Caddy was about 15 car length's behind. I believe that you can do 150 and above but it would probably take another mile or two to get there. The car felt pretty stable at that speed also. It's pretty crowded traffic wise around here too and the Highway Patrol in Ohio tends to frown on testing and tuning on their highways. I go down to Atlanta at least once a year to catch the Nascar race so I'll wind it out on the way down and see what it will do. I've had it up to 120 a couple of times but not racing just goofing around. Some of you may ask why a Caddy? He started it...so I finished it.

Other cars/top speeds:

1968 Torino GT 289 2 barrel Holley
115 was as fast as it would go. It was shaking like crazy, scared the crap out of my buddies. It was a blast though.

1982 Mercury Capri 85 5.0 motor 3.55 gear about 120-125. Best feel car I've ever owned, knew every little twitch she had. Blew it up, still got her sitting in the garage.

1987 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe 125 Know that for a fact because that was what the cop that was chasing me said he topped out at. He gave pursuit for about 12 miles and then I overheated and had to pull over. Handled great but no power.

1989 Mustang LX 5.0 stock
Now I'm figuring about 145-150 because of the 85 mph speedo but I redlined it in overdrive so that's what it was supposed to do on top end. Worst feeling I ever had driving a car at speed, couldn't feel the road, it felt like I was riding on air.
