Had the 01 Cobra up to about 135, but it was dark so i figured i had better let up. Back in the day, i ran my parents infinity Q45 up to about 145. This past winter on my sled (Yamaha Viper 780), i ran the speedo up to 131 in a halfmile. I probably could have pulled further, but the motor was pretty fresh and i don't need to replace any pistons.

I'm betting a 96-98 Gen I 4.6L with a 99+ engine would kill a new GT on top end.

I saw some disturbing numbers the other day. My 1987 Mustang GT Hatch (Fox cars are known as flying bricks) has the SAME coefficient of drag that my 2002 Mustang GT Coupe has. .36 The C-5 Corvette is .29. That's another reason the LS1 F bodies are so killer in high speeds. They are wedge shaped and very aerodynamic compared to our cars.

would it help to get an aero kit from saleen or steeda? maybe the saleen SR or 351?

The aero kits from Saleen and Steeda are proabably going to be designed for true race track aerodynamic enhancement. That means more downforce and more drag. The other side is they may reduce drag where unwanted. If you talked with the manufacturer's you may be able to find out if they have any wind tunnel number for drag they can give you. The 00 Cobra R is makes about 450hp at the crank in the real world, yet it's top speed is around 170mph. The C5 Corvette makes about 350hp and it's top speed is about 175mph. Aerodynamics play a huge part in top end performance.

The 99 up GTs will only go just past 150mph before the COMPUTER cuts the fuel... bummer cause the stang would pull more. Unfortunately, the Mustang is not too friendly with aerodynamics past 150mph

I was coming back from LAs Vegas once, racing a WRX in yellow for almost 100 miles along the highway...very little traffic and very late at night. We would pull up beside eachother both going about 85, then we would floor it to see who could first get to the next batch of traffic. He would get up to about 135 or so then i think his computer cut his fuel...or he was too weak to go faster. I jammed the stick in 5th to get my stang all the way up to 150, thats right! and right about then the governor (computer) would kick in and slow me down. Oh well... this 4.6 sure does pull!

165mph... just a couple of weeks ago on the way to the Nevada Open Road Challenge race north of Las Vegas.

This was with 4.10's and just a tad over 6000 rpms and still pulling!

On a perfect highway for speeding, I reached high 120s before I left off the gas. The '90 LX stang just doesn't feel that safe at those speeds, even with the moderate suspension mods. Could have reached 145 pretty easily. Was still pulling pretty strong (relatively) through the 120s.

My friend who has a 98 GT 5sp has gone like 105-110ish, but also because he too woussed out.

Thanks,
DoranW

Default hit 125 last weekend (5spd 2002GT)

Hey all,
I hit 125 last weekend. Pushing my luck, I know. I only get the opportunity once every couple of weeks when I travel over the mountain when going home. Was still accelerating well. I ran out of road(actually, started the down hill side of the mountain, didn't like the idea of a fiery crash with the slower moving vehicles on their way down). My Valentine1 is doing well though. I honestly don't speed much at all. Just occasionally like to wind it up and go for a bit. Don't ever speed(100+) when other cars are on the road. I usually cross the mountain about 6 or 7 AM on Saturday mornings, so not much traffic.

I pin the needle at least twice weekly, but I have the 3.73 gears and have tried to do the math to figure out the top speed. The speedo is roughly .3 miles off for every mile, but 45 mph at 150 seems a little high, lol, so back to the drawing board. At any rate, before any mods, I have gone no faster than 140-142 before the engine said ok, that's enough. That was in 4th gear....ran out of road in 5th, but with stock gears, I don't think the top speed would be reached in OD anyway. I would venture to say that the top speed is somewhere around 145-150 mph. I'm getting the SpeedoCal from Dallas Mustangs, so hopefully I'll know soon.

1992: 86 IROC 305 AutoSled - 115...downhill, with a tail wind.

1993: 93 Pontiac Firebird Formula LT-1 6 Spd - 162...radar gun (thanks Bill the cop!)

1996: 93 Mustang GT 5 spd - 135 confirmed by Trooper (thanks for no ticket!)

1999: 89 Lincoln LSC 5 spd & 3.73s - 130 paced by bosses car (Cop car, calibrated speedo)
