Car = slower when hot...thermostat questions

Just got a 2002 GT and it really really moves. It runs a ton better when it's cold though, and I was wondering what thermostat is in there now, and what, if any should I replace it with, or should I leave it? Any solutions?

It will run better when its cold , not sure what your stock thermosta is but I would change it to a 180 degree , hypertech makes them , they also make a 160 degree but don't know many people that run that degree !! Just food for thought !!!

160 is for hardcore race applications, for street use, just run a 180, best of both worlds.

i have a 2000 GT and i have noticed the same thing. the one thing to consider is the temp of the air coming in. i've heard of a "resistor mod" where they put a resistor on the wires of the sensor that measures the temp. of the air coming through the intake. and basically it tricks the computer into thinking the air coming in is cooler than what it really is...

Thanks for the info about a thermo...I will get a 180, just like I have in my turbo volvo...

I was thinking something in the lines of an air mod, but i hear the "cold air systems" aren't really worth it...Would taking out the air silencer and dropping in a K & N filter do anything for the air temp or performance? Thanks, sorry for all the questions, still new to the stang world, but I know everything about turbo volvo's

Just so you know, if you go with a cooler thermo, it wont help you any if your fan isn't coming on at the same time. The factory thermo is 192 i think. I run a 180 and the fan is now programed to turn on a 176.

Colder intake air increases the the thermodynamic efficiency of any combustion engine on top of being denser and allowing you to burn more fuel. From what I've seen pulling the intake silencer and putting in a stock replacement K&N gives just as much gain as a cold air kit (2-5 hp).

you can get an adjustable fan switch from a local parts store, or if you are planning on getting a performance chip or something like it, you can look for one that is set up to turn the fan on sooner for use with cooler thermo.

Okay....Thank you.......What about the silencer removal and the drop in K & N. I'm sure I'll hear it suck in more, but will I actually feel a little difference? High end, low end? Also will it make the exhaust a bit louder? Thanks

It's not enough difference to feel seat-of-the-pants, but it adds a couple hp and makes the intake much louder, especially at high revs.

it will not make any part of you exhaust any louder and it really does not make the intake any louder , its a simple easy mod to do , give youa little horse( 2 to 7 max) but a K&N is just good to have , never have to replace , just clean it and put it back !!!

Southernstang97 - Taking out the silencer definitely made my intake much louder - sort of a happy hum at higher RPMS and WOT throttle. If taking it out didn't make the intake louder, it wouldn't be called an 'intake silencer'.

If it makes you happier to think that it really adds more sound , But really does it add that much sound , do you really feel like you can hear it that much more , I THINK NOT , if you do then THATS COOL ! I'm just glad to see it's the little thing in life that make you happy

But for the new people that are wanting to do this mod , its cheap and works good for 2hp to about 7hp , little extra gas mileage. K&N helps out better than that stock paper filter , but from what I have seen you will not notice any extra noise when driving from the intake and if you have stock muffler and h-pipe with cats you really will not notice any sound ! But thats just my 2cents , if you think you can hear more sound from just the K&N , hell its only 50 bucks to put a smile on your face !!

I've also got longtubes, H, Magnaflows, TB, and K&N - not sure if that made a difference as far as the sound when I removed the silencer. It's sort of a whirring, humming sound that comes on noticeably at over 4K rpm.
