'98 Cobra 1st mods??
Hey guys. My neighbor recently purchased a '98 Cobra with only 34,000 miles on it. I was wondering what free/cheap mods he could do to free up some horsepower, besides the obvious K&N, exhaust, pullies, etc.? I have a '90GT and am not as familiar with all the tips & tricks for the '96 & up 4.6s. Is there an air silencer that can be removed? Is the timing adjustable on the mod motors? Something I can do with my timing gun, or no? Any info. would be great.
Thanks in advance- Simi |

Unfortunately on the 4.6's, you cant just adjust the timing like on the 5.0's. The 98 I believe has 2 coil packs (4 cyls each) which unlike a distributor cant be adjusted. However, Steeda makes a timing adjuster for them which can be purchased to do this. Also, a power chip can be used to adjust the timing, but once it's set, you cant adjust it afterwords without having it re-burned. There is an air silencer that you can take out, but you have to pulle the whole air box to get to it. If you do that then get the cold air kit. They arent very expensive either and produce noticable results in the Cobra's. The Cobra's also LOVE long tube headers and an X pipe. These are relatively mild to moderate modifications which will produce significant results.

Good question. Now I cant remember whether it was in the front of the air box or off the the fenderwell. I only had my stock air box on for about 3 days before I put the cold air on it.

Keep the silencer, When I removed mine I ran slower at the track. I lost nearly 2 mph with it out so I threw that sucker back in.

Get a off-road X-pipe, gears, some gears, maybe some gears, and some gears would be nice.
BTW....did I mention that gears would be a great mod. L8ter, Josh, aka tireburner gears
