Question Need some help all you racers!

Ok, I go to a small school, and after I bought myMustang, I had the nicest car in school. Well, now, this made a few others jealous as hell. So, now there is a damn senior that is going to buy a 1994 Mustang GT. Well, I like Mustangs, but this guy treats car like **** ! He is getting a 1994 Mustang GT with a 5.0 liter V8. I have a 1998 Mustang GT, with a 4.6. The problem here is, he wants to waste me and I know he can with a 5.0 liter! The car he is getting is unmodded and he probably won't mod. It is a 5 speed coupe. Mine is a 5 speed coupe. Is there any small mods in which I could add to give me an advantage? Thanks in advance!

Unmodded (the 95) you can waste him stock for stock but you could do the usual mods
RAM AIR
UNDERDRIVE PULLIES
Advance your timing
But make certain MOD #1 for you is gears.
3.73s
Check STEEDA for prices. Let's you know what you're getting into. Once you start ... you can't really stop.

Your 98 has 10 more hp stock than the 95, so right off the bat you have the advantage. Also, you know your car well, and he probably won't know his at first, so I would definitely give you the nod. If I were you, I would put the gears in quickly (and secretly) and then play like you think he'll beat you. When everyone is there to see it, you'll hand him his *** in front of everyone. Good old American fun!

Hehe, I wanna lay it to him so bad! I was talking to him and all he could talk about was the 5 liter it had, and how big the thing was. Well, then, he starts saying that the 4.6 liter has way less power since it is a 4.6 liter. That pissed me off! Makes me want to "hand him his @$$" as you guys say, right then! GRRR!

I have a '97 with only K&N and flowmasters. I raced my friends bone stock '95 and pulled a fender on him through 2nd. Our cars were pretty much dead even, the only time I pulled on him was through the 1-2 gear change (he shifts like a grandma). I'd say your race would be pretty close, as is. If you get the gears, then no chance. Do you know what kind of gears you have now? Stick with the 3.73's for your car if you do decide to get some.

Stock for stock your car will beat him if you can shift, alot of it is driver. Your car has 10 hp more but is also a little heavier cause the 4.6 engine is actually heavier, weight wise, than the 5.0. If you haven't already take off the air silencer as well as put in a K&N air filter so the car can breathe. Makes all the difference in the world. Around $53 at Oreillys for the K&N. Unless you have the Steeda timing adjuster you can't change the timing. Don't worry about that right now anyways. What kind of tires do you have? If you don't have them get Z rated tires. Softer compound and stickier than regular tires (unless you wanna get drag radials or slicks) . I've got about 25,000 miles on my Dayton Daytona ZRs and still plenty of tread left. Tires make a big difference. 3.73 gears from Fordmotorsport. Diversified Marketing in the MM&FF has them for $149. You can't beat that. I've tried to find cheaper. You will love the 3.73s and it won't hurt your mpg's very much either. Exhaust. Have you done any work here yet? If not, get a better flowing H or X pipe as well as better flowing mufflers. Got to get rid of some exhaust restriction. On mine I still have the stock H-pipe on but I had the tailpipes and mufflers cut off, and then added about a foot and a half +/- of pipe after the H-pipe and made turndowns that dump in front of the rear axle and mounted/welded them to the brackets where the mufflers mounted. It's not as loud as you would think. Those stock cats have quite a bit of restriction. It's at least something you can do for right now for sound/performance and then later you can go all out on the exhaust when money permits. It frees up quite a bit of exhaust when you get rid of those restrictive stock muffs and that bend in the tailpipes as well as a nice weight reduction. Those suckers are very heavy. It cost my $30 at the muffler shop to have this done. It sounds great. Trust me. Everyone around here loves it. I didn't want my car to sound like everyone else's Flowmaster. No really loud drone at 2000 rpm either. I've had people tell me it sounds alot bigger than a 4.6 or 5.0. I get alot of complements on it. You get on it and it just sounds bad @ss. You could also get underdrive pulleys and subframe connectors will make a difference too by stiffening up the chassis. Go out somewhere and practice your launches and you shifting. Figure out where you need to shift in the rpms too. I beat 5.0s when my stang was stock as well as now. Practice, practice, practice. Most people do not know how to drive their car.

Well, I am still young but I do want some of those mods. My car came with a K&N Air Filter, and has the stock gears. How much are 3:73 gears? And where can I get them installed? See, I only have limited money and would want the gears. Also, how do you remove the air silencer? Sorry for these dumb questions, but, I need to learn! Thanks for the replies!

If he can drive it it will be a close race either way.

Its really going to come down to driver. So get your launch and shifting down. Seeing hes new to the stang he probably wont drive it that well.

The 5.0 has more torque then your 4.6, remember that, so it could pull you in the beginning. Also if hes got K/N, removed silencer and added some timing watch out.

If I was you, get the 3.73 gears, and pulleys. That will really help you out. Then practice your launch.

Get your 3.73s from Diversified Marketing. They have an add in the MM&FF mag. $149. How many miles are on your car?. Just shop around for shops that do this work. I just looked in the yellow pages under auto racing as well as auto repair shops. Also transmission shops. Call some of the local Ford dealers around and ask how much they'll charge to do it. You'll also need to get a new pinion seal and new shims. A new crush sleeve should come with the new gears and pinion nut. Don't buy used gear. They will whine. I've been there/done that. Depending on how many miles are on the car you will probably want to pick up a new pinion cone bearing as well. Also get your 3 quarts of gear oil (80W 90 is what Ford recommends) (it actually takes a little over 2 quarts) as well as a bottle of friction modifier (alot cheaper at like Oreillys or someplace rather than Ford's friction modifier) for the positrac. I got mine installed for $200 at a speed shop here. Total after I bought everything and after installation was about $400. Well worth it. If you supply all the parts Ford does it for about $200. At least the one here that I talked to did and all dealerships are supposed to go by a book that already has the prices that they are supposed to charge and man hours per particular job that Ford has. The air silencer is a rubber, snorkel looking thing that fits on to the air intake box in which the filter is housed. The air silencer's "snorkel" looking part fits thru a large hole in the fender. Like as if you are changing the air filter, undo the clasp on the air box as well as take out the bolt that holds the box to the fender (8mm wrench or socket) and completely remove the air box. Then just grab hold of the rubber snorkel and yank it off. Then re-install filter and housing (make sure the two rubber deals under the air box are fitting back down into their holes). Wahlah!! Especially with the K&N you can hear the air being sucked in thru the filter, even with the hood closed. Now at first you'll notice kind of a hissing/air sound in the vents when you accelerate. That was the main purpose of the "air silencer". To get rid of that noise. You get used to it real quick. I don't even notice it anymore. Have fun!
