I belive the sizes are 65 and 70mm respectivly. The mas air does not need to match the T/B. Go with the C&L with no CAI and a 70-75mm T/B.

Yea CAI are just for looks it flows the same (proven) as a K&N in the stock box, stock size TB is 65mm and adding a 70 or 75mm TB to a stock engine will do nothing or maybe even hurt horsepower is what I've been told on here cause its over kill. The late 80's early 90's 50. stangs upgrade to a 65mm for aftermarket so yea your fine I also have a 96gt

The C & L is a good buy, it flows better than the stock MAF, by keeping up the air velocity. The 75mm T/B will probably make you loose about 20 HP. The 70mm may be a good idea if you have headers and other exhaust work and are planning to get a blower in the future, otherweise it will slow the air velocity and you will lose horsepower. The ford engineers made these engines and tuned them to the right sizes. If a 70mm t/b gave you 8 hp on a nearly stock 4.6 then the 4.6 would come with a 70mm t/b. Think of it like a river. when the river is narow the current flows fast. When the river widens up it slows the current. Same thing with air flow on an engine. A 75mm t/b may flow a higher CFM but your nearly stock engine doesn't need the higher CFM, so all it does is slow the air velocity, and when it enters the intake manifold you loose all that power. Keep these princepals in mind before you guys mod your cars, the engineers makeing 6 figures designing these engines aren't idiots, so make sure that your engine needs the change you have in mind before you do it.

Stock TB = 65mm
Stock MAM = 80mm I just gutted my factory MAM, and I left just the sample tube intact. Most people will say that it's a no-no, but I picked up 1 mph at the track be doing this mod.

Are you sure 96+ gt's came with 80mm MAF's cause I dont think they did. 96-98 cobras had 80mm Maf's cause I have a 96 gt and I bought the 80mm MAF from C&L and its BIGGER for sure then my little stock unit and everything is usually bigger on the cobras then the gt's.

And actually, I can't believe that you didn't know that all 96+ stangs came with an 80mm MAM, except for V6's. Dude, go measure any stock Mustang MAM, and you'll see. My di-calipers do not lie. Does anyone else here not believe that 96+ stangs come with an 80mm mass-air meter????? |

I know nothing about MAM sizes, but....
Is it possible that there is some weird measuring system for mass air meters? So that maybe the stock size is called a 70 mm, but actually measures 80mm, and maybe the C&L is called an 80mm but actually measures bigger than stock, say 90mm or somthing? Just a wild guess, xto |

I put my stock unit next to my C&L and THERE IS a difference or they would ******* sell an aftermarket. What I'm thinking is the C&L is grined down to a real 80 with without that lame screen and stock isnt or something like that. Someone who knows back me up please.

Also doesnt ford call them MAF(mass air flow unit) and doesnt chevy use the term MAM(mass air meter)?

The C&L is less restrictive than the Stock MAF. It flows better. Bigger is not always better, you have to have the right size calibrated for your engines size and volumetric effeciency. I think C&L makes a kit where you use parts from your stock MAF and the parts you replace flow better.

MAM or MAF call it what you will, but they still do the same thing. And they is no special measuring system, use a f u c k i n g ruler or some di-calipers, what ever, just measure the smaller end.
Also, bigger is not always better, like mlambrecht82 said. Look at what the old 5 liters came with, 60mm TB and a 55mm MAF, and they still would put down some very decent numbers stock. Now that's on a 302, now we are down to a smaller CI engine, only 281 CI. How much more airflow do you think this smaller engine needs??? Sure go ahead and put a 90mm MAF or whatever, and you might pick up some HP, but all on the top end, and you'll also lose some on bottom end. This is kind of like putting a dominator on a stock 302, sure if it's tuned right it'll run good, but it's overkill. Do you see what I'm saying??? And yes, the stock MAF on my 1996 GTS/248a is 80mm. |

I never said anything about bigger is always better I just said the C&L unit is bigger and yes LESS restrictive then stock. Just like buying a 70 or 75mm TB for a stock engine i.e my 96 I know thats overkill and would most likely decrease HP.
