Question Free mods?

I keep hearing of all these free mods, but I only know of a couple. Anyone know the ones a 97 Cobra will benefit from????

Free mods usually consists of the removal of the air silencer, bumping the timing and running 93 or 94 octane, any lightening up of the car, proper adjustment of the TPS...... what else you guys know????

2 chamber flowmasters, Bassani off-road X-pipe, MAC cold air induction, Kirban short throw, Heavy duty 3 core radiator, FMS 3:73's, Timing bump to 14 degrees, SRP billet racing pedals, Kenwood sound system

The throttle position sensor is a new one to me. What do you guys do to it? Also, I knew about the timing but never bothered. Worth it? What are you guys setting your timing at with similar mods as mine?

Unfortantly adjusting the timing isn't a free mod, because you need an adjustable timing sprocket to do it. ($180 or so).

Most cars do best with the initial timing set between 14-16 degrees. Stock its 10.

I thought it couldn't be done on our cars without a timing adjustor from someplace like Steeda?

That is what 97snakedriver is talking about, all the Steeda timing adjustor is a adjustable timing sprocket.

4.6L you can't adjust the TPS sensor like you could on the 5.0L. You can remove the air silencer, remove weight and practice. The resistor mod is not free but very cheap.

To be honest driving is everything, I bought my car in November and went to the track every Wednesday and Friday till the end of January. I started off running 14.4-14.6 and by mid January I was running 14.0-14.1 with nothing done to the car. I just learned how to drive it better.

If you look on the sticker on the underside of the hood, it says something to the effect: "Idle speed and timing are not manually adjustable."

You can adjust the timing with a timing adjuster from Steeda, BBK, and I think some else makes one now too, or you can do the resistor trick. The resistor trick is a little hap-hazard, but it does work. And its cheap, like 15 cents or so.

If you place a resiter across the harness of the IAT (Just up stream from the MAF) that measures the tempature of the incoming air, you can fool the computer into thinking its getting colder air then it really is, and it will bump the timing a little.

It sort of, kinda, sometimes works. There's also the Puffin box, which is just a variable resiter that does the same thing. You could do it with a pot too. Radio Shack, resisters from about 100K-120K.

theres other little things you can do for cheap power, and since i love to piss with stuff and i am a supa dupa cheapskate ive found several little things.
1.remove screen between air filter and MAF sensor, be sure you put somthing in place of the rubber gasket that was around the outer edge of the screen so it is still air tight when assembeled
2.you can modify your MAF sensor so that you get more flow and trick your 'puter once again, you figure this one out im not having anyone wanting me dead cuz they destroyed their MAF...:^)
3.there is yet another idea i had long ago and i scrapped it cuz i thought it wasnt feasible, and lo and behold someone patents it and is making lots of money. lol (dont i feel stupid.) but if you go to spiralmax.com you will see this thing. you can make one for nothing out of a old cambells soupcan with some tinsnips and some patience i made a nice one in about 30 min. it works too, when you make it, size it to fit after the MAF sensor-make it fit perfectly in the rear housing of the MAF but be careful to secure it to your MAF so your intake dont suck it out. 4.if you are not in CA, you can unbolt your cat converter section of your x-aust system and use a thin steel rod to beat the cats out, just be sure to get it all out or it will clog your mufflers when you reinstall them, do not damage your o2 sensors!
5.for an awsome sounding exaust for minimum investment, i spent $50 on mine (really!) just put on some glasspacks in place of the stock mufflers, all you gotta do is get the correct hardware for the install. me and my buddy had mine installed in 2hrs and you keep your stock exaust tips, and you can keep your exaust the same as it was (put together with flanges) just cut the flanges off the old mufflers and bolt them to the glasspacks
(its not that hard to do)and rest assured you will not sound like every other stang out there with flowmasters on :^)

When placing a resistor across the IAT sensor, do you place it in the wiring or within the plastic housing?

Also, what wattage resistor is used? I'm assuming it's 100 - 120 ohms, but don't know the # of watts.

You place the resistor in the wiring end of the plug, make sure you leave the factory sensor in the intake tube or you will have a leak.

There are different values that you can use but a 100Kohm resistor (1/2 watt) is equivalent to 30*.

So I have to cut through the sheathing on the wires and solder a resistor into it? Across the two leads?

No, just take the plug end and place one end of the resistor in each of the two holes from the plug. Make sure they are contacting the metal in side the plug.
