Post Speedo removal - ???

I just replaced the regulator in my guage panel (86 GT). Since I'll be pulling it out again to replace the speedo - how do you get the #%@! speedo cable off? I read "push the clip towards the back of the speedo and pull the cable off" but that didn't work!
Also, now that I've got it back together the starter won't turn over. Haven't had a chance to check the clutch switch. Does the power go directly from the ignition switch to the clutch switch to the solenoid? Or does it go through the guage panel somewhere? Help! I have to start the thing with a screwdiver till I have time to fix it.

You have to squeeze that white plastic collar, and it should let go of the lip it's resting on. Notice that there should also be one longer tab on it; that's where you pinch it, straight in toward the cable. The cable should now slide right off the back of the speedometer. Hope this helps. I just woke up so if any of this is unclear, email me.

OK - that makes sense. Now WTF did I knock loose during this struggle to kill my starter? I checked my clutch interlock and it's good, what else?

NEVER MIND - found remnants of alarm system with cheesy wiring installed by former owner. There's a relay clipped into a couple wires leading down from the ignition switch and one of the connectors pulled loose.
