Which gears are reccomended in my new 02GT?

you'll hear a lot of different answers as to which gear is best, but the general consesus is nothing less that 3.73. most will probably tell you 4.10. just a matter of preference, if you do a lot of highway driving you may prefer the 3.73s, other than that 4.10s

i agree with above. 4.10s @ 70 mph = 2500 rpm.

in our camaro's all I heard were go with 3.42 or 3.73's, why 4.10's in a stang? Is the OD ratio on the auto so great you can run it?

If you get a stick, go with 3.73's (maybe 4.10's) if you get an auto, it's 4.10's all the way. Yeah your gas mileage will suffer a little, but cmon, the speed will make up for it!!

If you browse the other stang message boards, 90% of the guys would recommend 4.10's(stick or auto). I have a 02 GT 5 speed and im torn between 3.73's or 4.10's.

I just had 3.73s and I loved them to death! As soon as I get some loot, I'm gonna get some more (I exploded my stock posi). Now I have 3.55s and I hate them more than Hondas!

That being said, I still got over 300 miles to the tank, all highway, averaging 70-75 mph with the 3.73s and a 5-spd.

I have 3.73's and love them...changed the whole attitude of the car, as far as I am concerned. personally, i wouldn't get 4.10's, cuz i am of the opinion they are for track use, not everyday use. i drive mine on a daily basis on interstate (not all that far mind you, but interstate nonetheless), and i don't think i could handle them. i did alot of research on them and concluded, that for me, my driving habits, and my commute that 3.73's would be the best balance for me. but thats not the same for everyone else, as they have different needs than i do. i almost put in 3.55's but decided against it. i also take my car on monthly trips up to 7 hours long, and i generally run 80-100 mph on the interstate. 4.10's would be waaaay to high for me. two months from now, i might go down to 3.55's. right now, even lead footing around, i am getting about 19 mpg mixed driving. i might see 20 mpg all around if i can keep my foot off the gas and be disciplined about my shift points. i dont think 23 mpg would out of the question cruising at 80 mph. we shall see!

Wow, Thanks for all of the feedback. I think Im going to go with th 3.73s.

Now, can an average home mechanic like myself tackle this job? Would I be better off bringing it to a shop? What kinda labor costs am I looking at?

Sorry bout all the questions

Default the low down

i have a 98 cobra.
4.30s are fastest
4.10s are great, but a little steep.
3.73s for lots of driving.

i have 4.10s, i only drive the car in nice weather. if i drove everyday, i'd go with 3.73. the rpm difference is not that great (break out a calculator). driving around on avg, getting on it a little here and there, i get 20-21 mpg.

Will I need to recal the speedometer after a swap?

You will either need a speedo compensator (I think you can get that at Dallas Mustang?) or the computer needs to be reprogrammed for the gears.

if i remember correctly, there is speedo gear for the 4.10 you have to replace, but there isn't one specifically for 3.73s, you can only get close.
