Sorry to latch on to this post, but I was just wondering...

How do different pulleys increase power? Less friction?

Thanks,

It makes your stuff run slower therefor more horsepower but with that the alt run slower and doesnt make good power for like hot heat and cold air. My buddy had some pullies on a 97 gt and his car would always overheat with a 160 stat and would start sometimes and had bad heat and cool not cold air therefore i dont want pullies.

I have the BBK pulleys on my 97gt, they come with a new alt. pulley. That way the alt doesnt spin slower. Your heat will work fine, it has nothen to do with pulleys, and the A/C only does that at idle, above idle and you'll never know the difference. I also have a 160 stat and the computer is reprogrammed to turn the fan on a 170, and have never had an overheating problem... and just to make a point, i live in Phoenix Az where its get into the 110s on a daily basis.

The reason he overhated was the 160 stat, not the pulleys. You need to change the engagement of the fan if you go that low, and you shouldn't go that low anyway. I know plenty of guys running 160's that overheat with the stock pulleys, and they don't understand why.

U/D pullies give you horsepower because they create less drag on the crank. If you step down the crank pulley and step up the other ones, it takes less force to turn them, just like on a mountain bike. Think of the front crank as the crank pulley, and the alternator and h2o pump pulleys as the rear. Make sense?

FYI, unless you have a big stereo system (read multiple amps and big subs) you don't need to worry about charging. Also, unless you have cooling problems already, you shouldn't have a problem with the u/d pulleys running hot. Do NOT change your t-stat because the system needs to have time to cool the water before running it back through.

get a one piece dampner crank pulley. Steeda and March both make them.

And yes, it does make warranty claims more difficult.

Thanks for the info, very helpful.

Does this really make a big difference in HP or Torque? What kind of percent gains can you get?

Thanks again,

You know, just today I asked my ford dealership if U/D pullies would play with the warranty...they told me yes and no. The fact is, if you put on a set of pullies and (this was his example) blow a power steering pump because youre spinning it too fast, then warranty wont cover it, but if the pullies do no damage, and he'd never heard of a car having problems from them, and you bring in the car for warranrty work, they'll overlook them...so if they dont directly cause a problem, youre in the clear....so dont buy a crappy brand and make sure you know the dealership rather well...i know the guy down there and he wouldnt overlook a warranty problem for me, but he'll look the other way fro small unimportant things...

honestly, of the dozens of people ive heard of using them, this thread has the first bad experience i've ever heard...

i have an 02GT, and after talking with the technician today, im gunna buy a set of steeda pullies...

QUESTION: My GT was made in May of 2002. Do I have the new or old water pump? I don't have most of the improvements that the later 02s have (injectors, headrests), so would I still have the older water pump or do I have the newer one, or how do I find out before I get the pullies. ?? I'd also appreciate the "how-to install" on them...and any tools i'll need...

There is a guide to id-ing your pump on Steeda's website. You can also call their tech support. The "how to" on the install and list of parts, all comes with the directions, and your repair manual.

If you need a hand holding, just have someone esle do it.

Well my bad, that kid was dumb and yes I also had the BBK pullies but i sent them back cause my bolts were rusted pretty bad even after i used some rust removal spray dont remember the brand but i had an airgun that hooks up to the air pump and it wasnt powerful enough to remove the bolts and i didnt wanna pay a shop to use there powerful gun so i got the bigger maf system insted.

actually pullies will never void your warranty just take them off before going to the dealer and put the originals back on just be careful not to ding up the original bolts
