First or Second Gear?

I dont know whether its me being a paranoid driver, trying to clear my driving record in a V8 Mustang or thoughts of burning the throwout bearing in my 1996 GT by shifting aggressively..I always accelerate from second gear, and I never race this is just normal driving. Should I not be doing that?...Its just that first gear is very short and unless I shifted hard into second I'd be going very slow...then again for some reason I'm no longer a good judge of how fast I am or should be going in any gear.
