steeda tri ax shifter?
anyone here have a steeda tri-ax shifter, if so what do you think of it ?
also does anyone know the differences from the 96-97 and the 98 gt's, i have noticed in all the magazines that the 98 models dont have the same aftermarket parts? |
I run the B&M Ripper but I have felt a Tri-Ax and liked it. Hammer runs one and some others do as well so they can give you the low down.
Someone will correct me here but the 98 GT's have 225hp - 10 more than the 96-97's. It's either due to a different tune on the computer or that in conjunction with a slightly different exhuast setup. I think the console is slightly different as well with a cup holder. I don't think the 98's came stock with a strut tower brace either (not sure). Other than that they are basically the same. Someone here can verify and correct. ------------------ 66 Tahoe Turquoise Coupe Laser Red 96GT Ragtop Both are slow but easy on the eyes! |
It's a great shifter, light years ahead of the stock one...
The 98 GTs had 10 more hp stock (225) and I think they have different brake lights.... But most of the engine parts SHOULD be the same... (to be honest, I don't know what Ford did to grab another 10hp out of it) ------------------ "The Yellowjacket" 1998 Mustang GT 13.97@103 "Hey, you weren't supposed to be that fast!"- Turbo Eclipse Driver |
Hey Hammer, how are the brake lights different than the 96-97's? Just curious.

From what I know Ford changed the exhaust header configuration a little and that's where the extra 10 hp comes from.
As far as the taillights, as far as I know they are the same 96-98. I personally haven't seen a difference between 96-97 and 98. Stefan how do you like the B&M Ripper? I'm trying to decide between it and the Steeda. ------------------ 1996 Mustang GTS |
I didn't know if Hammer was talking about the actual lights themselves or the assemblies - as the 94-95's have the horizontal slats and the 96-98's have the vertical slats.
96GTS - I actually like both the Tri-Ax and the Ripper. I got an incredible deal on the B&M Ripper through www.carparts.com so I went with it. Someone described the Steeda Tri-Ax as kind of ratchety which describes it pretty well. It was awesome on the car I drove that had it, though. The Ripper feels awesome and it is definately solid. Anything is better than stock. You'd be happy with either one I guarantee. I haven't changed my gears out yet so when I do that will be the true test. To be honest I think I am going to go with 3:55's. That might sound like a wuss out but the car sees quite a bit of interstate time. I'm not worried about gas mileage i'm just paranoid about engine wear. If I regularly see constant speeds of 75-80 I think i'd be safer with 3:55's as opposed to 3:73's (unless anyone can argue otherwise). I'd love 3:73's but i'm just scared. Anyway, enough rambling and I hope that might have answered your question. ------------------ 66 Tahoe Turquoise Coupe Laser Red 96GT Ragtop Both are slow but easy on the eyes! |
I had 3.55s before the 3.73s that I have now. Go ahead and get the 3.73s. There's not that much difference, rpm wise, on the highway, and I still get in the 20s mpg. I do alot of interstate/highway driving as well. Most of it at about 75 mph. The rpms are just about right. It's nice to not have to shift to pass someone, even in a hurry. With those gears with just a little bit of gas you're around them quite quickly. No downshifting to 4th just to pass someone unless you really have to haul to get around them. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...rd/biggrin.gif I think you'd like the 3.73s better than the 3.55s in the vert.

Thanks for the info 96GTS. I'm planning on getting the gears and a hi-flow hpipe this year sometime. HP Motorsports in Omaha. quoted me a good deal on parts and install for the gears. I'll keep the 3:73's in consideration.

Something else to keep in mind is the UPR Blue Thunder shifter. It's basically the same as the Steeda Tri-ax but has a stronger handle and is cheaper. http://www.mustangworks.com/interact...oard/smile.gif If I remember right I paid $129 for mine at Bradenton last year.
